The choice of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) relevant to the subject is crucial to contextualise the teaching in a broader framework of global development and social responsibility. The SDGs were established by the United Nations as a roadmap for achieving sustainable development in various social, economic and environmental areas by 2030. Below are some SDGs that we consider particularly relevant to the teaching of EU law, together with an explanation of their relevance.
SDG 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions
SDG 16 promotes peaceful and inclusive societies, access to justice for all and the building of effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels. This goal is particularly relevant for European Union law, as the EU is founded on the rule of law and the promotion of human rights. The study of EU law involves analysing how EU institutions, such as the European Parliament, the European Commission and the Court of Justice of the European Union, work to strengthen the rule of law, guarantee justice and protect the fundamental rights of European citizens. In addition, the EU plays a crucial role in promoting peace and stability in Europe and the world.
SDG 10: Reducing Inequalities
SDG 10 aims to reduce inequality within and between countries. The European Union has a number of policies and mechanisms to address economic and social inequalities between and within its Member States. EU cohesion policy, for example, aims to reduce disparities between regions and promote balanced development across the Union. The study of EU law provides an opportunity to explore how these policies are implemented and what impact they have on reducing inequalities, as well as to analyse the associated challenges and criticisms.
SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth
SDG 8 promotes sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all. The European Union has a strong commitment to improving working conditions and promoting balanced and sustainable economic growth. EU law includes a number of directives and regulations that address issues such as labour rights, social security, and working conditions. Analysing these regulations and their implementation provides students with an in-depth understanding of how the EU contributes to economic and social development.
SDG 13: Climate Action
SDG 13 focuses on taking urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts. The European Union is one of the most active global players in the fight against climate change. European climate and energy legislation, including the European Green Pact, sets ambitious targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, promoting renewable energy and improving energy efficiency. In teaching EU law, it is essential to examine these policies and their impact both within the EU and globally.
SDG 4: Quality Education
Although SDG 4 focuses primarily on education at the global level, its relevance to EU law lies in promoting inclusive and equitable quality education and lifelong learning. The EU supports numerous education and research programmes, such as Erasmus+, which promote mobility and academic cooperation between Member States. Examining these initiatives allows students to understand how the EU contributes to improving education and vocational training in Europe.
