The financial system plays a
crucial role in achieving the 2030 Agenda. Through sustainable
finance, financial institutions can channel resources to projects
that promote inclusive economic development and environmental
protection.
Although the financial system takes into account all SDGs,
the ones that get the most attention are those related to decent
work and economic growth (SDG 8), industry, innovation and
infrastructure (SDG 9) and responsible production and consumption
(SDG 12). Similarly, the financial system can contribute to climate
action (SDG 13), affordable and clean energy (SDG 7) and
sustainable cities and communities (SDG 11).
Most financial institutions offer products, services or
commercial initiatives aligned with these goals. In particular, for
banking customers, these are mainly bonds and investment funds in
line with the SDGs. On the other hand, banks are creating products
and services (from green mortgages to green car loans) that drive
the transition to a low-carbon economy.
Establishing sustainable financing frameworks also allows
banks to identify activities that can channel funding to projects
that facilitate the achievement of the SDGs.
Responsible investment policies, which consider environmental, social and governance (ESG) factors, can mitigate risks and promote long-term sustainability. In this way, the financial system not only seeks economic returns, but also becomes a key driver for the fulfilment of the 2030 Agenda, fostering more equitable and sustainable development.
