3. CONTENT DESCRIPTION

The course will present the theoretical guidelines and methodological structure of the archaeological discipline. It will review the historical development of archaeology from its origins to current trends, with a special focus on the latter and their variability. Basic concepts used in Social Sciences and History will be addressed, from classical theories to current debates. Various concepts will be discussed to analyze economic and social organization, relationships of reciprocity or social exploitation, political institutions, forms of power and the state, social classifications, uses of violence, and the ideological dimensions of social life. Students will be introduced to both the processing and the formal, technical, and functional study of material culture, and the possibilities and limitations of using this to study social change throughout human history will be discussed. The analysis will also cover how different views of "culture" have influenced archaeological interpretation and the boundaries attributed to it.

The course is structured around several theoretical topics, collective and individual assignments, and practical exercises related to the competencies to be acquired through the subject.

4. COURSE DESCRIPTION AND TEACHING METHODOLOGY

  • Tutorials can be personalized or in groups. During these sessions, the professor can supervise the development of non-classroom work, reorient students in areas where need or convenience is detected, advise on bibliography, and provide a more individualized follow-up, if necessary, of the student's personal work.

  • Classroom Lectures by the Professor: These can be of three types:

    1. Lectures: Fundamental theoretical concepts will be presented in the classroom, and the proposed content will be developed. The aim is to convey this content in a way that motivates students to reflect, helps them discover relationships between various concepts, and fosters a critical mindset.
    2. Problem-Solving Classes: The professor will solve problems or practical cases to illustrate the application of theoretical content and describe the practical work methodology of the subject.
    3. Seminars: Specific aspects related to the subject will be expanded and deepened. These will aim to be participatory, motivating students to reflect and debate.
  • Practicals Conducted Under the Supervision of the Professor: These can be individual or group-based:

    1. In Classroom/Laboratory/Computer Room: Direct contact with the archaeological record through either direct knowledge or through audiovisual media or computer programs. The goal is for students to acquire the necessary skills and competencies for the application of theoretical knowledge or technical standards related to the subject.
    2. In the Field: Group visits to archaeological sites and complexes, museums, research centers, as well as hands-on archaeological practice through surveying and excavation, aiming to develop the ability to contextualize acquired knowledge and its implementation in the archaeological record.
  • Non-Classroom Work: This can be done individually or in groups. Students will present the results of some of these works publicly, developing skills and abilities specific to the subject, as well as transversal competencies related to public presentation of results and subsequent debate, as well as sharing conclusions in non-classroom group work. Presentations can be:

    1. Practical issues done at home or
    2. Directed projects.

Students with special educational needs should contact the Student Attention Service (Servicio de Atención y Ayudas al Estudiante) in order to receive the appropriate academic support

5. ASSESSMENT METHODOLOGY

a) Continuous assessment of the students' independent work to verify the acquisition of competencies, skills, and abilities related to the course objectives, based on critical participation in classes and seminars, as well as the demonstrated ability to take advantage of the suggested practicals.

b) Attendance will be evaluated for both classes and scheduled visits, including visits to archaeological sites and various institutions related to the History of Archaeology.

c) Direct evaluation of the learning process results through a written test to verify the acquisition of the theoretical course content. Students must pass the theoretical exam to have their group and individual work evaluated, as well as all evaluations derived from the professor's observations.

d) Direct evaluation of the learning process results through the submission of practicals, in the form of individual and group work. Attendance at practicals and submission of the associated evaluable material is mandatory to pass the course.

e) For the extraordinary call, the evaluation system will be based on an exam covering the theoretical content of the course. Additionally, all practicals completed during the course must be submitted. If field practicals were not completed in a timely manner, the professor will design an alternative practical. Submission of the practicals is mandatory to pass the course. Likewise, students must pass the theoretical exam to have their group and individual work evaluated, as well as all evaluations derived from the professor's observations.
