3. CONTENT DESCRIPTION

Theory

1. Bioelements and biomolecules. Water and minerals. Acid-base chemistry, buffers and their fisiological importance.

2. Types, structure and function of carbohydrates.

3. Types, structure and function of lipids.

4. Structure and function of nucleotides and nucleic acids.

5. Structure and function of proteins.

6. Enzymes. Catalysis, kinetics and regulation. Vitamins and coenzymes.

7. Introduction to the metabolism. Metabolic pathways. Regulation and integration. Transduction signalling pathways.

8. Bioenergetics.

9. Mitochondrial oxidative metabolism: citric acid cycle, electron transport chain and oxidative fosforilation. Reactive oxygen species and antioxidant systems.

10. Metabolism of carbohydrates and their regulation. Glucolisis and gluconeogenesis. Glycogen metabolism. Pentose phosphate pathway.

11. Metabolism of lipids and their regulation. Lipoproteins.

12. Metabolism of nitrogenous compounds and their regulation. Protein degradation and metabolism of aminoacids. Urea cycle. Metabolism of nucleotides. Metabolism of porphyrins. Metabolism of nucleic acids and protein biosynthesis.

13. Metabolism of xenobiotics and drugs.

14. Metabolic diseases.

15. Integration of the metabolism.

Laboratory practice

1. Material, instruments, methods and basic techniques in the laboratory of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.

2. Determination of the concentration of serum glucose.

3. Determination of a serum activity enzyme.

Seminars

Problem and case based learning applied to the previous theoric curriculum.

4. COURSE DESCRIPTION AND TEACHING METHODOLOGY

Teaching methodology:

a) Academic sessions to the great group of students in presence of professor.
b) Academic sessions to the small group of students: 6 hours of laboratory practice, 6 hours of case and problem based learning.

Teaching methodology for PATIE student:
a) Tutorial session, proposal of activities and exercises in English (in presence of professor or virtual): 1 hour per week
b) Lecturer (Practice): 1-5 hours per week
c) Seminars: 0-2 h hours per week
d) Homework: 4 hours per week

Students with special educational needs should contact the Student Attention Service (Servicio de Atención y Ayudas al Estudiante) in order to receive the appropriate academic support

5. ASSESSMENT METHODOLOGY

Assessment methodology:
1) Evaluation of participation and attendance (5%), 2) theoric curriculum (75%), 3) Evaluation of laboratory practice (10%), 3)Evaluation of training activities including case and problem based learning and oral presentation (10%).

Theory will be evaluated by partial evaluation exams (eliminatory with mark equal or higher than 5 points) and a final exam.

Laboratory Practice will be evaluated by the presentation of lab results. The attendance to laboratory sessions and the presentation of the results are compulsory.

Training activities including oral presentation and case and problem based learning will be evaluated by the proffessor in base to the quality of the presentation made and dicussion.

The student can choose to make the exams in Spanish or English.

7. VIRTUAL / CLASSROOM TEACHING SCENARIO

1. Teaching methodology:

a) Academic sessions to the great group of students: 48 hours face to face in the extension allowed for the sociosanitary situation. 

b) Academic sessions to the small group of students. If it can not be done in person in its integrity, the following will be carried out: 3 hours of laboratory practice, 3 hours of online laboratory practice, 2 hours of online activity in computer room, 4 hours of online case and problem based learning activities including oral exposition and discussion and other activities. 

Teaching methodology for PATIE student:

a) Tutorial session, proposal of activities and exercises in English (in presence of professor or virtual): 1 hour per week

b) Lecturer (Practice): 1-5 hours per week

c) Seminars: 0-2 h hours per week

d) Homework: 4 hours per week

2. Assessment methodology:

1) Evaluation of attendance (5%), 2) Evaluation of the theoric curriculum and problems (75%), 3) Evaluation of laboratory practice (10%), 4) Evaluation of training activities including case and problem based learning and oral presentation (10%).

Theory and their application will be evaluated by continuous evaluation test (eliminatory with mark equal or higher than 5 points) and a final exam (mark higher than 4.0 points is necessary to pass the subject). 

Laboratory Practice will be evaluated by the presentation of lab results. The attendance to laboratory sessions and the presentation of the results are compulsory.

The oral presentation will be evaluated by the proffessor in base to the quality of the presentation made.

The student can choose to make the exams in Spanish or English.

b) Online academic sessions to the small group of students: laboratory practice and problem and case based learning including oral exposition and discussion.

b) Lecturer (Practice): 1-5 hours per week

d) Homework: 4 hours per week

DATA PROTECTION CLAUSE (on line exams)

Purpose: In accordance with the Universities Law and other national and regional regulations in force, carrying out exams and assessment tests corresponding to the courses students are registered in. In order to avoid frauds while sitting the exam, the exam will be answered using a videoconference system, being able the academic staff of the University of Jaén to compare and contrast the image of the person who is answering the exam with the student's photographic files. Legitimacy: compliance with legal obligations (Universities Law) and other national and regional regulations currently in force.

Addressees: service providers who are the owners of the platforms where the exams are carried out and with whom the University of Jaén has signed the corresponding data access contracts.

Storage periods: those established in current in force regulations. In the specific case of exam videoconference recordings, not before the examination records and transcripts are closed or the exam can still be reviewed or challenged.

Rights: you can exercise your right of access, amendment, cancellation, opposition, suppression, limitation and portability by sending a letter to the postal or electronic address indicated above. In the event that you consider that your rights have been violated, you may submit a complaint to the Andalusian Council for Transparency and Data Protection www.ctpdandalucia.es
