3. CONTENT DESCRIPTION

Theory block

The theoretical component will offer a description of basic aspects of telematics engineering, ranging from determining the need for a network, the type of information that can be sent, the evolution and standardisation processes, the role of the protocols and interfaces involved, the communication medium used and certain basic applications and services typically deployed.

In addition, activities such as reading news or watching videos will be incorporated to enable students to keep up to date with new developments in science and technology, associating everyday aspects that they use at user level with the technical content of the subject.

The programme of the theory block consists of five topics, with the following structure.

1. Basic concepts of communications networks (R9, R11, R21-24)

1.1. Introduction to Information Technology Engineering.

1.2. The network edge.

1.3. The network core.

1.4. Examples of network technologies.

1.5. Characteristics of communication channels.

2. Network architecture. Layers (R3, R6, R7, R21-24).

2.1. Communication protocol standardisation process.

2.2. Main standardisation bodies.

2.3. Communication protocol standards. Protocol architecture: OSI and TCP/IP.

2.4. Example of a link layer protocol. Encapsulation.

2.5. Interface standards

3. Introduction to telecommunication services and communication protocols (R1, R3, R6, R7, R10, R21-24).

3.1. Definition of a telecommunication service.

3.2. Classification of services.

3.3 Internet services: WEB, FTP and E-MAIL and multimedia services. 3.4.

In addition to the content programming, a problem-solving session is planned after each topic.

Practical block

The practical block of the course consists of laboratory practices, and its compulsory.

The objective of the proposed practices is the achievement of the established competences, as well as the necessary skills for students to assimilate two basic aspects of this subject, on the one hand, knowledge about networks and connections, and the acquisition of configuration and testing skills, and on the other hand, the configuration of basic service access applications and the analysis of the traffic generated, as well as its association with the aspects developed in the theory part.

In addition to the development of skills in the communication of information, ideas, problems and solutions in the field of engineering, they will have to respond to the results obtained as described in the methodology section, by means of interviews with the teacher and the delivery of reports after each practical. In addition, the students will work in pairs and the results will be shared in the seminars to encourage teamwork.

Practice 1. Configuration of Internet access (R3, R5, R8, R9).

Configuration of different browsers and operating systems to allow Internet access and the use of diagnostic commands.

Practice 2.  Types of connections and interconnection equipment (R3, R5, R8, R12, R18-R20).

Analysis and study of the different existing network interconnection interfaces. Physical characteristics, standards and bandwidths. Access to a device through a physical or virtual serial port using Hyperterminal. Evaluation of the performance of structured cabling in the laboratory using Fluke Networks devices .

Practice3. Deploying a local area network (R3, R5, R8, R11, R22-25).

Different configurations of a local area network. Wired or wireless network, differences in the use of a switch or a hub. Study of other existing network devices in the laboratory. Use and configuration of a router to allow access to the Internet.

Practice 4. Configuration of network applications (R1, R3, R5, R8, R10, R22-24).

Use and configuration on various operating systems of different network applications based on a client/server architecture allowing support services (DHCP, proxy) or end services (e-mail and file transfer) to be provided. Configuration of applications for the exchange of multimedia information in real time. 

Practice 5. Analysis and study of network traffic generated by different applications (R1, R3, R5, R7, R10, R24).

Use and configuration of a tool for analysing the traffic generated in a network, both in a wired and wireless environment. Study of the request and response messages generated by the applications used in Practice 5 and defined in the corresponding protocol. Study of the message formats exchanged by the different protocols involved in data communication. Determination of the network support protocols used.

Practice 6. Subnetting configuration and simulation (R1, R3, R5, R8, R10, R24).

Using the simulation program Cisco Packet Tracer or Network Simulator, a router will be configured to allow the interconnection of equipment belonging to two subnets. The same procedure will be carried out in the laboratory by configuring a router by console.

Seminars

The Group Tutorials consists of four seminars in which mainly doubts will be solved after the completion and delivery of the practical material, which will be solved jointly, thus promoting the sharing of the contents and skills learned:

  • Seminar 1 (1h).  Explanation of the practice system and evaluation.
  • Seminar 2 (1 h).  Group evaluation of P1/P2.
  • Seminar 3 (1 h).  Group evaluation of P3.
  • Seminar 4 (1 h).  Group evaluation of P4/P5.

4. COURSE DESCRIPTION AND TEACHING METHODOLOGY

Throughout all the activities of the course, attention will be paid to two fundamental aspects in relation to inclusion and equity (SDG-4), which will also be part of the participation aspect evaluation:

  • Promoting the use of inclusive language in both large and small group lectures, both written and oral, and attending to activities of various kinds (lectures and seminars where the student can be the instructor, practice with hardware and software, reports and tests with multiple choice questions) focused on being equitable with the different learning abilities of the student.
  • Attendance, as well as active, respectful and responsible participation, either to raise doubts or to respond to the teacher's requests or questions, will be evaluated positively in its corresponding factor.

 

Large group lectures

The methodology to be followed in large-group lectures will be a mixture of introductory activities, lectures and the presentation of theory and general examples in the classroom designated for the subject by the centre.

In addition to the presentation of the theoretical content of the course, the ability to collect and interpret data and handle complex concepts within Information Technology Engineering will be developed and promoted, in order to make judgements that involve reflection on ethical and social issues.

Students must follow the lecturer's presentation with the material provided for this purpose through the PLATEA platform, whether notes or slides, which must be completed with their own notes and with the subsequent review of the basic and/or recommended bibliography.

The autonomous work of the student should focus on the revision of the concepts and theoretical aspects seen in class, exercises completion, as well as their study with the material provided by the lectures, the student's notes and bibliography.

  Small group classes

 The small group classes will be implemented through work sessions in the laboratory that will focus on the configuration of equipment for interconnection in a network and the performance of diagnosis tests, the deployment of basic services and the analysis of the traffic generated. Prior to these sessions, students in pairs will have to complete some autonomous work in preparation for the practicals supported by a script that will be published in PLATEA, which will include both the autonomous work activities and support information for carrying them out, as well as a detailed description of the tasks to perform in the laboratory and the associated information that must be recorded and shared with the lecturer during their final supervision.

Besides the initial practices preparation, the autonomous work will focus on the preparation of the documentation to submit, as well as on completing the unfinished work started in the laboratory. Special emphasis will be placed on the need for continuous training and to undertake this activity independently throughout their professional life, as well as on the ability to keep up to date with new developments in the field of Information Technology Engineering, with a more technical approach.

Group tutorials

Group tutorials will be used to resolve doubts, monitor and supervise work and exercises, as well as to attend and participate in the different seminars planned for the course, in addition to talks, conferences, workshops and/or seminars, designated by the lecturer, with the aim of completing and updating training and obtaining general, transversal and/or specific competences defined for this activity, such as the value of continuous training, entrepreneurship or the review of technological innovations in the course.

5. ASSESSMENT METHODOLOGY

Global Assessment

The Global Assessment modality will be carried out according to the outcomes of the activities described in the section "Methodology and activities", in addition to those described in the section "Detailed description of the Global Assessment" that will be weighted by considering the aspects and percentages detailed in the above table.

The Global assessment modality consists of two parts:

  • The work assessment during the term, according to the tasks defined for this purpose.
  • The completion of a FINAL EXAM on the day set for the exam during the evaluation period.

 The distribution of the weights for each assessable aspect of the two aforementioned parts, and according to the activities described in the table above, is as follows:

 Grades obtained in an aspect during the teaching term in the GLOBAL assessment will be maintained until the end of the academic year.

  Final Exam: At the end of the term, on the day set for the course within the exam period, there will be a final exam of the theoretical part and exercises of the course (aspects S2 and S3), in which students must demonstrate that they have acquired the competences and learning outcomes established for these aspects. The weight of this exam in the final grade will be 30% of the total, as reflected in the table "Weighting of the Global Assessment", with 15% corresponding to aspect S2 and the other 15% to aspect S3. The specific conditions, as well as the material and/or documentation that may be used in the final exam will be established by the lecturer.

Final Assessment

In order to pass the course, students must obtain a grade equal to or higher than 5.0 out of 10 in the overall results considering all the assessed aspects, provided that they have obtained a grade equal to or higher than 4.0 in the final exam and in the laboratory/computer practical part (S4).

Students will have the option of resigning the GLOBAL evaluation, and it will not be possible to return to it once the resignation has been made.

Final Exam Modality

In the FINAL EXAM modality, an exam will be held on the day set for the course within the exam period, which will cover all the course contents, ensuring that students have acquired the competences and learning outcomes established for the course. The two parts of this written exam are weighed as follows:

  • Part 1: Attendance and participation, theoretical concepts and completion of study cases or exercises assignments (S1, S2, and S3): 70%.
  • Part 2: Laboratory/ computer practical work (S4): 30%.

The specific conditions, as well as the material and/or documentation that may be used in the Final Exam will be established by the lecturer.

In order to pass the course, students must obtain a grade equal to or higher than 5.0 out of 10 in each of the two parts.

Students who have passed the S4 aspect (laboratory/computer practical work) of the course, through GLOBAL ASSESMENT, with a grade equal to or higher than 5.0 out of 10, will not have to take Part 2 corresponding to this aspect in the exam. The same grade obtained in the GLOBAL ASSESTMENT will be assigned to this part.

The parts passed at each exam attempt will be maintained until the end of the academic year.

Detailed description of the Continuous Assessment

The activities are described according to the categories in Table 1:


S1. Attendance and participation (10%)
In this section the following competences will be assessed: C.14, C.15, CG.2, CG.3.
The positive evaluation of this section will mean that the student has achieved the competences listed above and the following  learning outcomes: R1, R3, R5, R7, R8, R9, R10, R11, R18, R19, R20, R22, R23, R24, R25.

Attendance will be registered for lectures, practical classes and group tutorials. In relation to participation, the following will be assessed: the activity of the students in the resolution of the self-training activities proposed in the lectures and/or group tutorials; and the completion of the practices in the time stipulated in the laboratory hours:

  • Attendance will be evaluated with up to 0.5 points. The instrument  used to measure it will be attendance sheets, and as a criterion it is established that the maximum is achieved with an attendance of over 80%.
  • The active participation of the student (up to 0.5) is measured with the mark obtained on the autonomous work questionnaires carried out at the beginning of each practical session. Each of the practical sessions has associated independent work activities, such as the revision of certain knowledge, the search for certain information or resources, etc. Before each session the student will have to complete a short questionnaire on this work.

S2. Theoretical concepts of the subject (30%)
In this section, competences C.14, C.15, CG.2, CG.3 will be assessed.
The positive evaluation of this section will mean that the student has achieved the competences listed above and the following learning outcomes: R1, R3, R5, R6, R7, R8, R9, R10, R11, R12, R18, R21, R22, R23, R24.

During the course, two eliminatory tests are scheduled on the contents covered in the theoretical part of the subject (15%). At the end of the course there will be a written test (15%) consisting of both theoretical questions and practical aspects, through which the skills acquired through lectures and problem classes will be assessed.
The mid-term exams will have a format similar to that of the final exam, but shorter, with multiple-choice questions (40%) and short-answer questions (60%). The first exam will be on the first two units and the second on Units  3 and 4. Unit 5 will only be assessed in the final exam. In the final exam, the remaining 15% will be assessed by means of one or more problems covering the aspects reviewed in the proposed exercises.
A 4.0 in the mid-term exams will be required, otherwise the evaluation of S2 will be given only by the final exam mark, which will have a weight of 30%.

Thus, on the date of the final exam, there will be another exam of the whole theoretical subject which will represent 15% of the final mark and which will have a similar format to the one described for the mid-term exams.

S3. Completion of assignments, cases or exercises (30%)
In this section, the following competences will be assessed: C.1, C.12, CG.6, CG.9.
The positive evaluation of this section will mean that the student has achieved the competences listed above and the following learning outcomes: R1, R3, R5, R6, R7, R8, R9, R10, R11, R12, R18, R21, R22, R23, R24.
During the lectures, problems and case studies will be proposed and solved. the two In the two mid-exams carried out, problems and practical questions very similar to those included in the problem wording (15%) will be introduced. A mark of 4.0 in these exams will be required to maintain this evaluation system. In the final exam, the remaining 15% will be assessed by means of one or more problems covering the aspects dealt with in the proposed exercises.

It will be required to obtain a 4.0 in the partial exams, otherwise the evaluation of S3 will be given only by the grade of the final exam, which will have a weight of 30%.

S4 - Laboratory/Computer practices (30%)
In this section the competences CB4 will be assessed.
The positive evaluation of this section will mean that the student has achieved the competences listed above and the following learning outcomes: R1, R3, R5, R7, R8, R9, R10, R11, R18, R19, R20, R22, R23, R24, R25.
It will be assessed on the basis of the deliverables associated with the practices (15%) and the mark obtained in the  two mid-terms written exams on questions associated with the activities developed during practices(15%). The control of the delivery of this material will be carried out through the PLATEA platform. In the first of the mid-terms exams taken, the first three practices will be evaluated, and in the second, the fourth and fifth. Practical 6 will be assessed only on the basis of the work done in the lab sessions and submissions.

In the case of passing 4.0 out of 10.0 in the evaluations carried out with midterm exams, the student will add to this mark the mark obtained in the deliverables, otherwise he/she will have to take the final exam, which will have the same format as the midterm exams.

Given that the attendance rate, both for the large group lectures and for the practical group classes, has been stablished at 50%, the following resources will be used:

  • Videoconferencing infrastructure in the classroom or laboratory with a video and audio capture system for use in a videoconferencing system or virtual classroom such as Google Meet or BigBlueButton.

Since all the teaching, either in the exposition lectures in large groups or in the lectures in practical groups, will be taught in a non-face-to-face way or on-site, the following resources will need to be used:

DATA PROTECTION CLAUSE (on line exams)

Purpose: In accordance with the Universities Law and other national and regional regulations in force, carrying out exams and assessment tests corresponding to the courses students are registered in. In order to avoid frauds while sitting the exam, the exam will be answered using a videoconference system, being able the academic staff of the University of Jaén to compare and contrast the image of the person who is answering the exam with the student's photographic files. Likewise, in order to provide the exam with evidential content for revisions or claims, in accordance with current regulation frameworks, the exam will be recorded and stored.

Legitimacy: compliance with legal obligations (Universities Law) and other national and regional regulations currently in force.

Addressees: service providers who are the owners of the platforms where the exams are carried out and with whom the University of Jaén has signed the corresponding data access contracts.

Legitimacy: Data will be managed according to legal regulations (Organic Law 6/2001, December 21, on Universities) and given consent provided by selecting corresponding box in legal admission documents

Data recipients (transfers or assignments): Any person allowed to get access to every teaching modality

Rights: You may exercise your rights of access, rectification, cancellation, portability, limitation of processing, deletion or, where appropriate, opposition. To exercise these rights, you must submit a written request to the Information, Registration and Electronic Administration Service of the University of Jaen at the address above, or by e-mail to the address above. You must specify which of these rights you are requesting to be satisfied and, at the same time, you must attach a photocopy of your ID card or equivalent identification document.
