3. CONTENT DESCRIPTION

The most commonly used protocols in TCP/IP networks will be studied at each of their levels.

In addition, students will be equipped with the ability to keep up to date with the latest developments in science and technology, especially in this type of subject, which is so closely linked to such a dynamic environment as telecommunications.

The programme of the theoretical block is made up of seven subjects, with the following structure.

THEORY

Unit 1. Introduction.

Unit 2. Network protocols.

Unit 3. Link layer.

Unit 4. Ethernet.

Unit 5. Network layer.

Unit 6. Transport layer.

Unit 7. Application layer.

PRACTICAL UNITS

The practical block of the course consists of four laboratory practicals, which are compulsory.

The objective of the proposed practicals is the achievement of the established competences of the subject.

In addition, communication skills will be developed in terms of information, ideas, problems and solutions in the field of engineering and society in general through documentation delivery processes or oral presentations.

With regard to the organisation of the work, collaboration and teamwork will be encouraged through the design of the practicals themselves.

Practical 1. Basic configuration of IP networks.
In this practical, the basic configuration of an IP network will be carried out. Devices such as wireless access points, repeaters and routers will be configured. In addition, different security measures will be configured in these devices.

Practice 2. Switching. Configuration of VLANs.
In this practice, the configuration of a manageable switch will be carried out, creating different virtual local area networks. At the same time, different switches will be connected to each other.

Practice 3. Switching and Routing. Interconnection of VLANs.
In this practice, the configuration of a router will be carried out in order to establish the interconnection of different VLANs.

Practice 4. Programming of Internet of Things devices.
In this practice we will carry out the programming of different IoT devices such as Arduino and Waspmote, with special emphasis on the programming of communications.

4. COURSE DESCRIPTION AND TEACHING METHODOLOGY

The development of large group and small group lectures will be focused on promoting quality teaching by giving priority to activities that foster inclusive and equitable learning (SDG-4).

Lectures with big group of students

They are based on the explanation of the theoretical concepts of the subject through lectures, alternating with the explanation of exercises and practical problems. In addition to the presentation of the theoretical content of the subject, the ability to collect and interpret data and handle complex concepts within Telematics Engineering will be developed and strengthened, in order to make judgements that involve reflection on ethical and social issues.

Lectures with practical groups

They are developed in the laboratory, and are based on the explanation by the teacher of the practical configuration of equipment and the realisation by the students. In addition, work in a collaborative environment will be encouraged, as well as mixing with the communication of results, with special emphasis on the need for continuous training specific to activities linked to telecommunications throughout their professional life independently.

Collective/Individual tutorials

Collective tutorials will be used for resolving doubts, monitoring and supervision of work and exercises, as well as attendance and participation in the different seminars planned for the subject, in addition to talks, conferences, workshops and/or seminars, designated by the lecturer, with the aim of completing and updating training and obtaining general, transversal and/or specific competences defined for this activity, such as the value of continuous training, entrepreneurship or the review of technological developments in the subject.

Attendance, as well as active, respectful and responsible participation in the aforementioned activities, will be assessed in accordance with the assessment system in this guide.

Students with special educational needs should contact the Student Attention Service (Servicio de Atención y Ayudas al Estudiante) in order to receive the appropriate academic support

5. ASSESSMENT METHODOLOGY

At the end of the term the students can choose between two assessment modalities: CONTINUOUS ASSESSMENT or FINAL EXAM .

Continuous Assessment

The Continuous Assessment modality will be carried out according to the outcomes of the activities planned during the term and described in the section "Methodology and activities", in addition to those described in the section "Detailed description of the Continuous Assessment" that will be weighted by considering the aspects and percentages detailed in the above table.

In order to pass the course, students must obtain a grade equal to or higher than 5.0 out of 10 in the overall results, but with the condition of obtaining a grade equal to or higher than 4.0 in each of the individual aspects assessed. Otherwise, in the case of failing any of these two conditions (a grade equal to or higher than 5.0 out of 10 in the overall results, or equal to or higher than 4.0 in any of the assessed aspects), the student must follow the Final Exam modality.

In the FINAL EXAM modality, an exam will be held on the day set for the course within the exam period, which will cover all the course contents, ensuring that students have acquired the competences and learning outcomes established for the course. The two parts of this written exam are weighed as follows:

  • Part 1: Attendance and participation, theoretical concepts and completion of study cases or exercises assignments (S1, S2, and S3): 70%.
  • Part 2: Laboratory/ computer practical work (S4): 30%.

The specific conditions, as well as the material and/or documentation that may be used in the Final Exam will be established by the lecturer.

In order to pass the course, students must obtain a grade equal to or higher than 5.0 out of 10 in each of the two parts.

Students who have passed the S4 aspect (laboratory/computer practical work) of the course, through CONTINUOUS ASSESSMENT, with a grade equal to or higher than 5.0 out of 10, will not have to take Part 2 corresponding to this aspect in the exam. The same grade obtained in the CONTINUOUS ASSESSMENT will be assigned to this part.
