3. CONTENT DESCRIPTION

1.INTRODUCTION. Chemistry of the natural products. Primary and secondary metabolites. Biosynthetic
pathways and classification.
 2.  SOURCES OF NATURAL PRODUCTS. Plant and animal kingdom. Marine natural products. Microorganisms. Semiochemicals. 3.  ISOLATION, PURIFICATION AND IDENTIFICATION OF NATURAL PRODUCTS. Essential oils. Extracts. Chromatographic separation and purification. Biological activities screening. Structural elucidation. 4. LIPIDS.  Fatty acids. Derivatives of fatty acids. Structurally and functionally related compounds with fatty acids. Applications.  5. CARBOHYDRATES. Structure, configuration and conformation of monosaccharides. Reactions of monosaccharides. Structural determination of oligosaccharides. 6. APPLICATION OF NATURAL PRODUCTS ON FOODS AND FRAGRANCES. Phenolic compounds with antioxidant properties: flavonoids, lignans and tannins. Terpenoids: flavours and fragrances. 7.  APPLICATION OF NATURAL PRODUCTS ON MEDICINE. Medicinal plants. Steroids and alkaloids. 

Activities of laboratory classes.

Preparation and chromatographic analysis of essential oils and extracts.

Chemical reactions on secondary metabolites.

4. COURSE DESCRIPTION AND TEACHING METHODOLOGY

Students have (i) to attend theory lectures; (ii) to attend laboratory classes, perform the experiments planned by the Lecturer, and prepare a written report on the work developed in the lab; (iii) to solve the works, cases or exercises proposed by the teacher; (iv) to pass a final test on concepts learnt in the course.

Students with special educational needs should contact the Student Attention Service (Servicio de Atención y Ayudas al Estudiante) in order to receive the appropriate academic support

5. ASSESSMENT METHODOLOGY

Ordinary date

Students have (i) to attend laboratory classes, perform the experiments planned by the Lecturer, and prepare a written report on the work developed in the lab (20%); (ii) to solve the
works, cases or exercises proposed by the teacher during  theory lectures (30%); (iii) to pass a final test on concepts learnt in the
course (50%).
Extraordinary date
The student could choose between two options:
a) The same described on the ordinary date.
b) Final test on concepts and activities learnt in the course: 100%.

8. VIRTUAL / CLASSROOM TEACHING SCENARIO

METHODOLOGY AND TRAINING ACTIVITIES

A1 Classes in large group (34 h), face-to-face. The degree of attendance of the different activities will be defined by the center depending on the social and health conditions and capacity of the teaching spaces.

A2 Classes in small groups (24 h), face-to-face. The degree of attendance of the different activities will be defined by the center depending on the social and health conditions and capacity of the teaching spaces.

A3 Group tutoring in large group (2 h), face-to-face. The degree of attendance of the different activities will be defined by the center depending on the social and health conditions and capacity of the teaching spaces.

EVALUATION SYSTEM

The same evaluation system will be maintained and it will be face-to-face for all evaluable aspects, to the extent that social and health conditions allow.

RESOURCES AND FACILITIES

The usual resources of the virtual teaching will be introduced. On the part of the students, communication infrastructure through the Internet will be necessary (computer, camera, microphone and Internet access; alternatively, a smartphone could be used).

Purpose: In accordance with the Universities Law and other national and regional regulations in force, carrying out exams and assessment tests corresponding to the courses students are registered in. In order to avoid frauds while sitting the exam, the exam will be answered using a videoconference system, being able the academic staff of the University of Jaén to compare and contrast the image of the person who is answering the exam with the student's photographic files. Likewise, in order to provide the exam with evidential content for revisions or claims, in accordance with current regulation frameworks, the exam will be recorded and stored.

Legitimacy: compliance with legal obligations (Universities Law) and other national and regional regulations currently in force.

Addressees: service providers who are the owners of the platforms where the exams are carried out and with whom the University of Jaén has signed the corresponding data access contracts.

Storage periods: those established in current in force regulations. In the specific case of exam videoconference recordings, not before the examination records and transcripts are closed or the exam can still be reviewed or challenged.

Rights: you can exercise your right of access, amendment, cancellation, opposition, suppression, limitation and portability by sending a letter to the postal or electronic address indicated above. In the event that you consider that your rights have been violated, you may submit a complaint to the Andalusian Council for Transparency and Data Protection www.ctpdandalucia.es
