3. CONTENT DESCRIPTION

Theoric curriculum

  1. Overview of regulation and integration of metabolism.
  2. Signal transduction systems. cAMP-dependent pathway, inositol polyphosphate-dependent pathway, receptor tyrosine kinases (the insulin receptor), cGMP and nitric oxide-dependent pathways, and steroid hormone receptors.
  3. Metabolism of carbohydrates, lipids and nitrogenous compounds and its regulation. Glycolisis and gluconeogenesis. Metabolism of glycogen. Pentose phosphate pathway. Digestion, absorption and transport of lipids. Biosynthesis and catabolism of fatty acids. Ketone bodies. Biosynthesis of triacylglycerols and  membrane lipids. Metabolism of nucleotides. General aspects of amino acid metabolism. The urea cycle.
  4. Regulation of gene expression. Regulation of gene expression in prokaryotes: Lactose operon. Arabinose operon. Tryptophan operon. Lysogenic and lytic growth in lambda phage. Small ARNs. Regulation of gene expression in eukaryotes: Chromatin structure and gene expression. Transcription factors and its interaction with DNA. Post-transcriptional regulation.
  5. Protein folding, maturation, sorting and degradation. Mechanisms of protein folding. Post-translational modifications of proteins. Protein-sorting pathways. Protein degradation: The ubiquitin-proteasome pathway and lysosomal proteolysis.
  6. Methods for the study of  gene and protein expression.  Western-blot. Proteomics. Northern-blot. PCR. Real-time PCR. DNA arrays.  

Laboratory practice

Effect of starvation on rat-liver glycogen content and glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase activity and expression.

This curriculum is connected to SDG-3 (Good-Health and Well Being), SDG-4 (Quality Education), SDG-9(Industry, Innovation and Infraestructure) and SDG-15 (Life and Terrestrial Ecosystems).

Previous knowledge of general biochemistry is highly recommended.  

4. COURSE DESCRIPTION AND TEACHING METHODOLOGY

TEACHING METHODOLOGY:

a) Academic sessions to the large group of students: 26 hours (2,6 ECTS)

b) Academic sessions to the small group of students: 32 hours (3,2 ECTS)

c) Collective tutorial sessions: 2 hours (0,2 ECTS)

TEACHING METHODOLOGY FOR PATIE STUDENTS:

a)  Lecture (Theory). Tutorial sessions, proposal of activities and exercises, and supply of printted material in English (in presence of professor or virtual), 1 hour per week

b) Lecture (Practice): Explanation of laboratory practice in English, 20 hours

c) Seminars: 0-2 hours per week

c) Homework: 4 hours per week.
