4. COURSE DESCRIPTION AND TEACHING METHODOLOGY

"Teaching of Natural Sciences in Early Childhood Education" is a subject that aims to facilitate the acquisition of knowledge through theoretical and practical sessions.

It is developed through large group teaching (theoretical sessions, didactics outings, seminars, ...), medium group (practical sessions) and small groups (group tutorials, debate and discussion, ...). Moreover, interested students have an established schedule to attend individualized tutorials.

The theoretical sessions will be presented in a mainly expository way, but enhancing the interaction with the students. The practical sessions are compulsory and face-to-face and will take place in the teaching laboratories; the students will reflect the results and conclusions obtained in a notebook of practices that must be delivered at the end of the period of practices.

Students with special educational needs should contact the Student Attention Service (Servicio de Atención y Ayudas al Estudiante) in order to receive the appropriate academic support

5. ASSESSMENT METHODOLOGY

The evaluation of the subject "Teaching Natural Sciences in Early Childhood Education" is understood as a basic process of monitoring and evaluating the work and learning carried out by students during the teaching period.

Students must demonstrate their theoretical and practical knowledge in relation to:

  • The adequate acquisition of the fundamental theoretical-practical knowledge of the most basic aspects of
    the Sciences of Nature.
  • Detailed knowledge of current trends in the teaching and learning of Natural Sciences at the Early Childhood Education level.
  • Timely knowledge about the fields that interrelate the Sciences with other areas of knowledge.
  • Proper management of current trends and related sources of documentation and information
with learning, teaching and didactic research associated with the knowledge of the Natural Environment in
    Early Childhood Education.
  • Autonomy at work.
  • The appropriate organization, planning and development of interventions in the Early Childhood Education classroom.
  • The active use of reflection and innovation in science teaching.
  • The proper development of basic scientific procedures.
  • The elaboration of quality, rigorous, adequate in terms of format, synthetic, analytical and critical works

The information about the intended performance will be obtained:

  • In relation to the conceptual domain of matter:
    1. Formal correction of responses
    2. Exposure clarity
    3. Correct linguistic exposition
  • In relation to laboratory practices
    1. Formal correction of responses
    2. Quality, creativity and rigor of individual and group work
    3. Proper handling of specific laboratory instruments
    4. Adequate interpretation of observed phenomena through the application of scientific theories
    5. Participatory attitude and interest
    6. Compulsory attendance

The final grade will take into account the entire teaching-learning process and will consist of two parts:

Theoretical Part: completion of a written test (value: 60% of the final grade). The practical part only will be added to the theoretical one with a minimum qualification in the theoretical test of 45% (2.7 out of 6).

Practical part: attendance to the practices (value: 10% on the final grade), delivery of the notebook, interest and exam (value: 30% on the final grade). The completion of the practices is mandatory to obtain 100% of the final grade.
