3. CONTENT DESCRIPTION

TOPIC 1. GENERAL PRINCIPLES OF SUSTAINABILITY IN NATURAL AND MANAGED ECOSYSTEMS: THE OLIVE CULTIVATION.

Unit 1. From preindustrial  to conventional olive oil cultivation. Main olive oil production systems.

Unit 2. Restoring negative and positive feedbacks in the olive grove: Importance of organic matter and management of the main olive by-products.

 

TOPIC 2. MANAGEMENT PRACTICES IN ORGANIC OLIVE OIL CULTIVATION

Unit 3. The fertilization in organic olive grove.

Unit 4. The management of soil and natural plant cover in organic olive groves.

Unit 5. Prevention and control of major pests of organic olive oil cultivation.

 

TOPIC 3. NORMATIVES AND REGULATIONS. THE ACCREDITATION OF ORGANIC PRODUCTION.

 

Unit 6. Legislation, regulation, accreditation procedure and bodies and institutions related to organic farming.

 

TOPIC 4. ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT OF PESTICIDES.

 

Unit 7. Peculiarities of the environmental impact of the application of pesticides in the cultivation of olive oil.

Unit 8. Methodologies for the assessment of the environmental impact caused by the application of pesticides in the olive grove.

Unit 9. Corrective measures and the report of integrated pest management.

4. COURSE DESCRIPTION AND TEACHING METHODOLOGY

Virtualised lectures (1.5 ECTS, 50%) : Virtualised lectures, with the support of TICs, aim to transmit and highlight the fundamental concepts of each unit, and to argue the general framework of the subject and the relationships between the various units and topics. Participation after questioning and debating will be encouraged throughout the creation of specific online forums. The student will be promoted to: (i) development of their own comprehensive notes for each unit, and (ii) personal study. For this, the student will be provided with teaching materials in the course, which will include teaching guidelines, audiovisual materials, notes, references and Internet addresses.

Seminars and tutorials in small groups (0.7 ECTS, 23%) . These will be devoted to: (i) the exposure of cases by both the teacher and student groups, (ii) joint discussion and critical reading of texts, and (iii) the resolution of issues and problems. Student will be encouraged to: (i) the personal reading of texts, and (ii) the personal resolution of issues selected from their own criteria that will available to students in the virtual platform. Moreover, specialized tutorials for solving doubts, supervision of supervised work will be done, and for a qualitative assessment of the degree of student progress.

Virtualised and on line practical sessions (0.8 ECTS 26.6%) , which include desktop practical session aimed at: i) evaluating various indicators sustainability and/or environmental impact assessment in real cases differing in management (organic versus conventional olive grove managements), ii) determination of the C-footprint in organic versus integrated or conventional production, iii) assessment of the energetic fluxes and efficiencies in organic versus integrated or conventional production, and iv) display of videos on the main management practices in organic olive production.

5. ASSESSMENT METHODOLOGY

Evaluation of the theoretical traininn g (75% of the final grade) shall be determined by the presentation (PowerPoint) of a topic directly related to the organic oliveoil farming by students (individually or in no more than 3 students group) and for a period of time ranging 15-24 minutes. Following the presentation, students will be subjected to questioning from other students and the lecturer. The degree of self-development, clarity and connection among issues will be the main criteria to qualify this test.

The evaluation of the practical sessions  (practical sessions + visit to an organic olive farming) will be made through the delivery of a small laboratory notebook containing the main issues treated in both practices and organic olive oil visit. Clarity, organization, synthesis and level of skills acquisition will be the main criteria for the evaluation of practical sessions.
