3. CONTENT DESCRIPTION

Theory

1.Introduction. Microorganisms and the environment.

2.Microorganismos: general characteristics; types of microorganisms; methods of study.

3.Energy metabolism and nutrition in Prokaryotes

4.Bacterial growth: influence of environmental factors.

5.Microbial adaptation mediated by phenotypic and genetic changes/regulation

6.Microbial diversity: evolution, systematics, and classification of microorganisms.

7.Bacterial groups of relevance from an environmental point of view. General overview of the major microbial groups (Bacteria and Archaea) and their function and relevance.

8.Distribution of microorganisms in the biosphere and their interaction with biogeochemical cycles.

9.Microbial interactions (including microorganisms and other living entities)

10.Environmental applications of microorganisms

 

Practical activities

-The Microbiology lab

-Direct observation of microorganisms under the microscope

-Microbial staining techniques

-Microbiology of the air, soil and water

4. COURSE DESCRIPTION AND TEACHING METHODOLOGY

Lectures. The main content will be presented to students as lectures. Students will be provided with a basic scheme of the topic in question so that they can further study each point by using the recommended book references.

Practical activities. Practical activities will be carried out by the students in the lab.

Global tutoring sessions. These sessions are intended to clarify questions and other comments on the subject, including learning issues that may arise.

Students with special educational needs should contact the Student Attention Service (Servicio de Atención y Ayudas al Estudiante) in order to receive the appropriate academic support

5. ASSESSMENT METHODOLOGY

Evaluation

Theoretical concepts: test evaluation. Students must achieve at least 5 points over 10 to pass this test.

 

Practical activities: continous evaluation. During the course of the activities, the teaching staff will ask questions about the fundamentals and interpretation of the results of the practical exercises. The teaching staff will also register student´s attendance (which is mandatory) and take notes on the student´s abilities and degree of participation in the activities.

7. VIRTUAL / CLASSROOM TEACHING SCENARIO

All training activities will be carried out in the classroom or in the lab, depending on the socio-sanitary conditions.

Some tutorial sessions will be online

Continuous evaluation of theoretical and practical assigments through the University Docencia Virtual Platform or by email, with a weight of 50%. In addition, students will pass through an online test in the date established by the Faculty. This test will have a weight of 50%.

Resources: Docencia Virtual Platform, Google Forms, GoogleMeet videoconference, and other GSuite tolos (Docs, Slides, Calendar, Drive) plus bibliographic resources available through the Libruary of the University.

8. VIRTUAL TEACHING SCENARIO

All training activities -including evaluation- will be carried out online

For the evaluation, the theoretical concepts will account for 50% and student work related to practical activities will account for 50%.

DATA PROTECTION CLAUSE (on line exams)

Purpose: In accordance with the Universities Law and other national and regional regulations in force, carrying out exams and assessment tests corresponding to the courses students are registered in. In order to avoid frauds while sitting the exam, the exam will be answered using a videoconference system, being able the academic staff of the University of Jaén to compare and contrast the image of the person who is answering the exam with the student's photographic files. Likewise, in order to provide the exam with evidential content for revisions or claims, in accordance with current regulation frameworks, the exam will be recorded and stored.

Legitimacy: compliance with legal obligations (Universities Law) and other national and regional regulations currently in force.

Addressees: service providers who are the owners of the platforms where the exams are carried out and with whom the University of Jaén has signed the corresponding data access contracts.

Storage periods: those established in current in force regulations. In the specific case of exam videoconference recordings, not before the examination records and transcripts are closed or the exam can still be reviewed or challenged.

Rights: you can exercise your right of access, amendment, cancellation, opposition, suppression, limitation and portability by sending a letter to the postal or electronic address indicated above. In the event that you consider that your rights have been violated, you may submit a complaint to the Andalusian Council for Transparency and Data Protection www.ctpdandalucia.es
