3. CONTENT DESCRIPTION

Study of the different aspects of the most important religions and issues in the political thought of the Ancient World.

Block I: Concepts and methods of the study of the religions and political thought of the Ancient World. Historiography of the history of political thought and ancient religions.

Block II:

1. Egyptian and Mesopotamian religions. Pantheon, agrarian and funerary cults, mythology, magic, priesthood.

2. Hittite, Syrian and Canaanite religions. Pantheon.

3. The religion of Israel. Nomadic (cattle cult), Palestinian (Canaanite influence), post-Captivity (Babylonian and Iranian influences) and Diaspora (Hellenic influence) periods.

4. Iranian Mazdeism. Divine dualism, funerary cult and eschatology, cult of Mithra.

5. Eastern despotism. Government and monarchy.

6. Aegean religions: Crete and Mycenae. Divinities, funerary cult, rites, priesthood.

7. The classical Greek pantheon. Archaic beliefs and rites, polis cults and mystical religions.

8. Hellenistic religion. Greece and the East.

9. Greek democracy. Political constitutions and utopias.

10. Roman religion in archaic and republican times. Archaic beliefs and rites, pantheon, worship, divination, priestly colleges. Religion and society.

11. Imperial Roman religion. Official cults, Greek influences and Eastern cults.

12. Roman political constitution. Monarchy, Republic, Empire.

13. Early Christianity. Jewish, Oriental and Greek influences. Organisation and worship. Sects and heresies. Church and State.

14. Christian political thought.

4. COURSE DESCRIPTION AND TEACHING METHODOLOGY

Each thematic module/block will end with practical activities, which, in the case of this subject, will focus on the analysis of ancient texts, maps and images related to the theory previously studied.

Collective tutorials will be organised at the end of the thematic blocks in such a way that students, once they have gone over the theoretical and practical contents, can raise their doubts or express their reflections to the teacher and to their classmates.

Students with special educational needs should contact the Student Attention Service (Servicio de Atención y Ayudas al Estudiante) in order to receive the appropriate academic support

5. ASSESSMENT METHODOLOGY

The active participation of the student in class, discusssions and debates (up to 10% of the total grade) will be evaluated through the teacher's observation and notes.

Likewise, the submission of an individual paper will be awarded up to 30 percent of the total grade; the quality of the documentation, originality, structure, spelling, writing and presentation will be assessed.

The student's grade will be based on a theoretical-practical exercise in which the student's mastery of the theoretical and practical knowledge of the subject will be assessed; this exercise will count for up to 60% of the total grade. In order to pass the exam and be able to take the average with the other evaluable activities (as long as they are handed in), half of this written exam must be passed.

7. VIRTUAL / CLASSROOM TEACHING SCENARIO

In this scenario, the contents will not change. Regarding the methodology, the lectures and practices will be carried out, interspersing face-to-face/live teaching and online teaching through the platforms agreed by the University of Jaén.
Regarding the evaluation system, it will not change with respect to the face-to-face/live system.

8. VIRTUAL TEACHING SCENARIO

In this scenario, the contents will not change. Regarding the methodology, all the lectures and practices will be held in digital format not in live (face-to-face) on the platforms agreed by the University of Jaén

Regarding the evaluation system and its percentage, these will be:
Observation and proffesor notes: 10%
Exam: 40%
Individual Work: 30%
Work developed during practical sessions, memories or reports: 20%

Addressees: service providers who are the owners of the platforms where the exams are carried out and with whom the University of Jaén has signed the corresponding data access contracts.

Storage periods: those established in current in force regulations. In the specific case of exam videoconference recordings, not before the examination records and transcripts are closed or the exam can still be reviewed or challenged.

Rights: you can exercise your right of access, amendment, cancellation, opposition, suppression, limitation and portability by sending a letter to the postal or electronic address indicated above. In the event that you consider that your rights have been violated, you may submit a complaint to the Andalusian Council for Transparency and Data Protection www.ctpdandalucia.es
