This course is a general survey of the English and Spanish literary histories and text in their sources from their origins until the 18th century, all within the common European context.

 It will revolve around four main axes, as follows:

- Tradition, evolution and breaking with the past in both literatures
- English literary genres compared with the Spanish ones
- Parallel developments
- Intertextuality: Spanish literature in English literatura; English literatura in Spanish literature

These axex will be worked out in four main classnote topics, elaborated by the lecturer, according to the following headings:

Topic 1. Tradition, evolution and breaking with the past in English and Spanish literatures
1.1. Overview of the English and Spanish literary histories from their origins. Common and differentiating elements
1.2. Evolution and breaking with the past in English and Spanish literary histories

Topic 2. English and Spanish literary genres compared and their evolution along literary history
2.1. Introduction
2.2. Narrative genres
2.3. Poetic genres
2.4. Dramatic genres

Topic 3. Parallel developments
3.1. In the Middle Ages
3.2. In the Renaissance
3.3. In the Baroque
3.4. In the 18th century

Topic 4. Spanish Literature in English Literature; English Literature in Spanish Literature
4.1. Intertextuality and transtextuality
4.2. Transtextuality in English and Spanish iteratures
4.3. Transtextuality in the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, the Restoration and the 18th century.

In turn, these four topics will go parallel with the study and analysis of the following choice of texts:
1. The Battle of Maldon and El Cantar del Mío Cid
2. "The Reeve's Tale" ( The Canterbury Tales) and "Enxiemplo de don PitasPayas" ( Libro del buen amor)
3. Petrarchist Tradition in England and Spain: sonnets by Petrarch, Thomas Wyatt, Henry Howard, Sir Philip Sidney, Edmund Spenser, and William Shakespeare compared widh sonnets by Garcilaso, Boscán, Lope de Vega, Góngora and Quevedo
4. Development of drama in England and Spain: A Woman Killed with Kindness by Thomas Heywood compared with El castigo sin venganza by Lope de Vega
5. English metaphysical, cavaliers and Olympian poets versus Spanish baroque and classicist ones: poems by John Donne, Ben Jonson, George Herbert’s, Richard Crashaw, Robert Herrick. Luis de Góngora and Francisco de Quevedo
6. Don Quixote in England: Don Quijote (Miguel de Cervantes) and Tom Jones (Henry Fielding)

Assessment will be ruled by Royal Decree 1125/2003 of September5th by which the European Credit Transfer
System is for officialuniversity degrees is established.

Active participation and attendance will be assessed with a 10 % rate of the final grading. The lecturer will based this portion of the assessment on the following aspects:
* Regular class attendance.
* Active participation in class.
* Participation in discussion.
* Signing in attendance list.

The mastery of the theoretical and practical concepts will be assessed through a written exam which will constitute 65 % of thefinal grading.

The remaining 25 % will be based on an individual paper. Thefollowing aspects will be taken into consideration: structure oft he paper, delivery in time, quality of the written/oral expression in English, quality of the content, originality, formal quality of the presentation.
Plagiarism will be penalized with the loss of the grading corresponding to this section.

The following competences will be taken into account: CB1, CB3, CB4, CB5, E01, E12, E13, E16, E21, G04, TO1, T03, T04.

Purpose: In accordance with the Universities Law and other national and regional regulations in force, carrying out exams and assessment tests corresponding to the courses students are registered in. In order to avoid frauds while sitting the exam, the exam will be answered using a videoconference system, being able the academic staff of the University of Jaén to compare and contrast the image of the person who is answering the exam with the student's photographic files. Likewise, in order to provide the exam with evidential content for revisions or claims, in accordance with current regulation frameworks, the exam will be recorded and stored.

Legitimacy: compliance with legal obligations (Universities Law) and other national and regional regulations currently in force.

Addressees: service providers who are the owners of the platforms where the exams are carried out and with whom the University of Jaén has signed the corresponding data access contracts.

Storage periods: those established in current in force regulations. In the specific case of exam videoconference recordings, not before the examination records and transcripts are closed or the exam can still be reviewed or challenged.

Rights: you can exercise your right of access, amendment, cancellation, opposition, suppression, limitation and portability by sending a letter to the postal or electronic address indicated above. Procedure aim: To manage proper recordings of teaching sessions with the aim of facilitating learning process under a multimodal and/or online teaching
