Teaching methodology description

Expository classes: master classes, theory exposition and examples

45 one-hour sessions in the classroom (master classes, theory exposition and example resolution).

Practical classes: classes in  computer lab

9 one-hour practical sessions in computer lab.

Practical classes: practical problems and exercises

6 one-hour sessions in the classroom, for the resolution of problems and exercises autonomously by the students

Tutorial sessions

Tutorial sessions will be held face-to-face at the scheduled time. English language will be used.

Students with special educational needs should contact the Student Attention Service (Servicio de Atención y Ayudas al Estudiante) in order to receive the appropriate academic support

5. ASSESSMENT METHODOLOGY

The student final mark will be the weighted average of the marks obtained in the following items:

  • A final written exam, where the students will have answer some short theoretical questions and solve some exercises (weight: 80%).
  • In-class tests, where the students will have to solve some exercises by using a statisitcal software, to evaluate the acquisition of skills in the practical sessions (weight: 20%).

7. VIRTUAL / CLASSROOM TEACHING SCENARIO

1) TEACHING METHODOLOGY AND TRAINING ACTIVITIES

The default teaching language will be Spanish. All activities will be 100% face-to-face or 50% face-to-face (with group rotation and videoconference broadcast to the rest of the group), depending on the number of students enrolling in the subject and the capacity of the classroom. If the number of students exceeds the capacity of the classroom and it does not have the technical systems required for broadcasting, all the students will take online lessons.

45 one-hour sessions in the classroom (master classes, theory exposition and example resolution), that will be broadcast by videoconference to the rest of the group. Periodical rotation of students.

If the classroom did not have the required broadcasting technical system, these sessions would be substituted by online videoconferences for all students.

Practical classes: classes in  computer lab

50% face-to-face (rotation), provided that the classroom  has the technical system required for broadcasting

9 one-hour practical sessions in computer lab, with periodical rotation of students and broadcasting to the rest of the group. If the classroom did not have the required broadcasting technical system, these sessions would be substituted by online videoconferences for all students.

Practical classes: practical problems and exercises

50% face-to-face (rotation), provided that the classroom  has the technical system required for broadcasting

6 one-hour sessions (50% small groups, broadcasting and student rotation), for the resolution of problems and exercises autonomously by the students. If the classroom did not have the required broadcasting technical system, these sessions would be substituted by online videoconferences for all students

Tutorial sessions

Face-to-face + online

Tutorial sessions will be held face-to-face or online by videoconference (synchronous at the scheduled time or asynchronous). English language will be used.

When appropriate, the teaching staff reserve the right to deny capture, publication,  broadcasting  or reproduction of their speech, image, voice and explanations.

 

2) ASSESSMENT SYSTEM

Face-to-face final exam (written test of exercises and practical problems):  50%

Face-to-face continuous assessment activities:

- Oral or written tests, with theoretical questions and practical exercises, carried out throughout the teaching period:  30%

- Resolution of practical cases with computer, which will be assessed by online tests, throughout the teaching period:  20%

Due to the continuous nature of these tests, their mark may be kept for the 2nd Extraordinary Call of this academic year. Nonetheless, those students who, for some justified reason, have not completed all the continuous assessment activities can take a single global exam in which both the acquisition of knowledge and the ability to apply it to practical situations will be assessed.

A student will be marked as "No presentado" (no mark) if they do not take any tests or continuous assessment tasks and do not take the final exam.

If the exam or some of the assessment tests could not be carried out face-to-face, they will be carried out online (see the non-attendance scenario  and the data protection clause included in this syllabus).

All assessment material will be available in English.

Tutorial sessions will be held face-to-face or online by any of the available communication channels  (videoconference with Google Meet, forum, chat or email), preferably at the scheduled time indicated in this syllabus or exceptionally at a different time, upon request.

8. VIRTUAL TEACHING SCENARIO

1) TEACHING METHODOLOGY AND TRAINING ACTIVITIES

The default teaching language will be Spanish. Both theoretical and practical lessons will be adapted to the virtual format and will be preferably held by videoconference, at the scheduled time.

45 one-hour online sessions (master classes, theory exposition and example resolution) by videoconference, with the help of slides, virtual whiteboard and explanatory videos with examples and solved exercises. All the necessary material will be available on the virtual teaching platform. 

Practical classes: classes in  computer lab

Online

9 one-hour practical sessions by videoconference. Since the required software (R) is free, students can easily carry out practical tasks developed in these online classes. The software R can also be used through the virtual PC service of the University of Jaén.

Practical classes: practical problems and exercises

Online

6 one-hour online sessions  for the discussion and resolution of problems and practical cases by the students.

Tutorial sessions

Tutorial sessions will be held online by videoconference (synchronous at the scheduled time or asynchronous). English language will be used.

Both the continuous assessment tests and the exam will be online. To guarantee the reliability of this assessment system, the following measures will be taken:

  1. If the number of students allows it, the continuous assessment tests on theoretical content may be carried out orally and individually.
  2. The exam will be divided into different parts and the response time of each one will be limited.
  3. Both the continuous assessment tests and the exam will be aimed at evaluating the ability to understand the contents, the correct application of techniques and the interpretation of solutions.
  4. While taking the continuous assessment tests and the exam, the students must be connected to a  Google Meet session, keeping the microphone and camera both open.
  5. The online evaluation tests may be recorded, in order to provide them with evidential content for revisions or claims, according to the data protection clause included in this syllabus.

DATA PROTECTION CLAUSE (on line exams)

Purpose: In accordance with the Universities Law and other national and regional regulations in force, carrying out exams and assessment tests corresponding to the courses students are registered in. In order to avoid frauds while sitting the exam, the exam will be answered using a videoconference system, being able the academic staff of the University of Jaén to compare and contrast the image of the person who is answering the exam with the student's photographic files. Likewise, in order to provide the exam with evidential content for revisions or claims, in accordance with current regulation frameworks, the exam will be recorded and stored.

Legitimacy: compliance with legal obligations (Universities Law) and other national and regional regulations currently in force.

Addressees: service providers who are the owners of the platforms where the exams are carried out and with whom the University of Jaén has signed the corresponding data access contracts.

Storage periods: those established in current in force regulations. In the specific case of exam videoconference recordings, not before the examination records and transcripts are closed or the exam can still be reviewed or challenged.

Rights: you can exercise your right of access, amendment, cancellation, opposition, suppression, limitation and portability by sending a letter to the postal or electronic address indicated above. In the event that you consider that your rights have been violated, you may submit a complaint to the Andalusian Council for Transparency and Data Protection www.ctpdandalucia.es
