3. CONTENT DESCRIPTION

This course offers the student an integrated overview of the main mechanisms involved in the processes of mid-cellular defense by reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reactive nitrogen species (RNS). Currently, the involvement of oxygen and nitrogen free radicals in many relevant metabolic processes and are known to be primarily responsible for certain mechanisms of cell damage in living beings, participating in the pathogenesis of different diseases and in numerous situations of stress. In this course we study the production of free radicals of oxygen and reactive nitrogen, as well as the different cellular functions of these oxygen and reactive nitrogen species and their involvement in various pathologies.

1.Biological functions of free oxygen, nitrogen and sulphur radicals in cell metabolism.

  1. Chemistry of the oxygen molecule: excited forms and reduced forms.
  2. Oxygen toxicity.
  3. Biochemical reactivity of nitric oxide.
  4. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) enzyme.
  5. Enzymology of reactive nitrogen species (RNS).
  6. Oxidative stress and nitrosative stress.
  7. Cell damage and cytotoxicity.
  8. Subcellular production of oxygen (ROS) and nitrogen (RNS) radicals.

10.Production of oxygen and nitrogen radicals in situations of cellular stress.

11.Role of nitric oxide in biological systems. Biotechnological applications.

12.ROS, RNS and cell signaling in biomedicine.

13.Cellular systems of antioxidant defence. Biotechnological applications.

14.Methodologies for the detection of ROS and RNS in biomedicine.

5. ASSESSMENT METHODOLOGY

Attendance (10%):
-Active participation in the class.
-Participation in the debates.
-Participation in group work.
-Seminars and defence (60%) : Discussion of the different thematic contents of the seminar carried out by the student that allows to evaluate the acquisition of the contents taught throughout the course, as well as the level of methodological understanding and the capacity of each student for the interpretation of the scientific bibliography.
- Practical classes (30%) : Attendance to the practical classes and delivery of a report of results of the practical classes that will include a commentary of results and the discussion of the same with the support of related recent bibliography. Attendance at the practical classes is compulsory as well as the delivery of the report through the virtual teaching platform ILIAS in order to pass the course. In the following calls, in order to pass the subject, the student must present a report on the practices as well as hold a seminar and present it, within those offered in the call for papers. On the other hand, as stated in the Regulations on the academic regime and evaluation of students (Article 18.): An announcement will be considered exhausted when the evaluation tests in which the student has participated together represent more than 30% of the final qualification of the subject.
