GEOLOGY OF SPAIN.
9. The greatest geological units of the Iberian Peninsula. Geology of the Balearic and Canary Islands.
In a scenario of face-to-face classes the presentation of the contents of the subject will be done in class by the teacher, with the support of audiovisual media. The projection of examples from different parts of the planet and the explanation of them will be one of the most used resources, since the local scale is really partial in many cases. These expository classes will be enriched, therefore, with the projection of images and videos of the themes that are treated in the program.
On the other hand, for each subject, we will try to find out the previous ideas brought by the students which, in more than one case, are wrong. For example, most of them at this level still think that Climate Change is a novelty that has never happened on Earth before. Lesson 8 of the programme, however, looks at this issue and concludes that Climate Change on Earth is the rule rather than the exception. The practical laboratory classes, in small groups, will focus on the recognition of the main groups of sedimentary rocks and the fossils they often contain. Nevertheless, the bulk of these practices will be dedicated to the training of students in the reading and interpretation of geological maps, a skill that we must try to develop in the student, for the enrichment that it will represent for their training.
For this, firstly, real samples of rocks and fossils will be handled and for the geological maps we start with very simple theoretical examples, which little by little become more complicated with the incorporation of more data, geological facts, to finish the training by analyzing a real geological map.
The field practices deal with two trips to nearby areas of the province of Jaén to see many of the contents studied in their natural context. You will learn how to use the geologist's compass, with level and clinometer, which will allow you to measure the direction and dip of surfaces such as stratification surfaces or fault planes. The orientation in space of these planes is fundamental to carry out an adequate reconstruction of the disposition of the materials of any region of the planet.
Students with special educational needs should contact the Student Attention Service (Servicio de Atención y Ayudas al Estudiante) in order to receive the appropriate academic support
