THEORY DEVELOPED

SECTION I: INTRODUCTION TO THE CLINICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY. ANALYSIS TECHNIQUES

Item 1. BASIC PRINCIPLES OF CLINICAL LABORATORY AND ENVIRONMENTAL ANALYSIS. Measuring units. Mass measurements. La boratory equipment. Laboratory water. Security in the clinical laboratory.


Item 2. ANALYTICAL TECHNIQUES FREQUENTLY USED  (I). Molecular absorption spectrometry. Fluorimetry. Turbidimetry and nephelometry. Luminometry. Atomic spectrometry. Osmometry. Chromatography. Electrophoresis. Electrochemical techniques.


Item 3. ANALYTICAL TECHNIQUES FREQUENTLY USED (II). Immunochemical techniques. Production of antiserum and monoclonal antibodies. Agglutination reactions and immunoprecipitation. Immunoassay with labeled reagents. Automation.

 
SECTION II:  CLINICAL  ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY 

Item 4. ANALYSIS OF BLOOD. Sample types. Collection containers. Variables Collection. Laboratory criteria for unacceptable specimens. Sample processing. Errors in the clinical laboratory. Quality control program.

Item 5. ANALYSIS OF URINE. Renal physiology. Urinalysis. Physical examination of the urine. Chemical examination. Microscopic examination

Item 6. METHODS OF ANALYSIS OF AMINO ACIDS, PROTEINS, CARBOHYDRATES, LIPIDS, VITAMINS AND ENZYMES. Definition and classification. Chemical, physical and biological properties. Specific analysis of clinical parameters: total serum protein, Urea, Albumin, Glucose, Insulin, Amniotic Fluid Phospholipids, Cholesterol, Triglycerides, and Vitamins (water soluble and fat soluble).

 
SECTION III: ENVIRONMENTAL ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY

Item 7. ENVIRONMENTAL ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY AND ITS SCOPE. Concept of contamination. Classification of chemical contaminants. Transport of pollutants. Criteria for the selection of the analysis method.


Item 8. ATMOSPHERIC ANALYSIS: GASES AND PARTICLES. Composition of the atmosphere, air pollutants and their common sources. Sampling and preconcentration. Analysis of gases. Sources of suspended solids. Measures of total suspended matter. Techniques for particle size discrimination. Particle analysis. Remote sensing techniques.

Item 9. WATER ANALYSIS: MAJOR  CONSTITUENTS AND TRACE CONTAMINANTS. Water quality: natural and wastewater. Sampling. Analysis of general parameters. Determination of gases and non-specific organic compounds. Analysis of major anionic and cationic components. Trace metal ions. Organic contaminants at trace levels.


Item 10. ANALYSIS OF SOLID SAMPLES. Types of solid samples. Sampling and storage. Determination of organic compounds. Analysis m ethods.

 

PRACTICAL PROGRAM DEVELOPED

Session 1

Practice 1: Determination of iron in serum.

Practice 2: Determination of albumin in serum.

Session 2

Practice 3: Determination of bicarbonate in serum.

Practice 4: Determination of ascorbic acid in urine by the official method of analysis (AOAC).

Session 3

Practice 5: Enzymatic determination of glucose in serum.

Practice 6: Determination of turbidity in water.

Session 4

Practice 7: Determination of dissolved oxygen in water.

Lesson 8: Determination of total organic matter in a soil sample.

4. COURSE DESCRIPTION AND TEACHING METHODOLOGY

1.- The lectures will be taught primarily as exposing lectures.

 
2.-  The student will attend a mandatory practice sessions that will be conducted the analysis of chemical compounds in different biological and environmental matrices.  

3. The students will develop Academically Supervised Activities: (a)  Seminars / Presentations: each student will select a topic of clinical or environmental interest which will be finally exposed in class to other colleagues; (b) E xercises, Problems and Test.

Students with special educational needs should contact the Student Attention Service (Servicio de Atención y Ayudas al Estudiante) in order to receive the appropriate academic support

5. ASSESSMENT METHODOLOGY

The theoretical examinationshall be written andwill be heldon the date setby the Faculty ofExperimental Sciences.

The practical sessions will be mandatory. The knowledge gained will be evaluated from the lab notebook.

To overcome the Academically Supervised Activities will be taken into account attendance, which is mandatory, and the work to be developed.

4 Practical sessions in specialized laboratories

Classroom (50%)

The 4-hour time slot will be subdivided into two, with half the group attending the first slot and the other half the second. In short, the student will attend in person half of the practical teaching (two hours in each practical session).

32 Theory sessions on the contents of the program

Online (100%)

They will consist of 32 sessions of master classes, one hour each, conducted by videoconference.

10 Sessions of resolution of works, cases or exercises

Classroom (100%)

They will consist of 10 face-to-face sessions, lasting one hour each, conducted in the classroom.

Some tutoring sessions will be done face-to-face and others online (synchronous and asynchronous).

Preparation and presentation of a topic related to subject matter. The students will have to carry out the work with the help of technological resources, which will finally expose the rest of the classmates in class (10%).

Also, they will do different exercises, problems and tests related to the topics exposed in the master classes (10%).

Laboratory practices

Compulsory attendance and preparation of a summary script of practices. Students must complete the theoretical foundations as well as discuss the results obtained in each of the practices carried out. Lack of attendance is reason for not passing the course.

III. Resources

For the development of the teaching methodology and the evaluation process, University of Jaén will provided ICT tools, among which are the ILIAS platform and the Google MEET platform. Likewise, there will be electronic bibliographic resources that do not require a physical presence in the library.
