Experiments to perform: 1. Synthesis of n-butyl bromide. 2. Synthesis of fluorenone. 3. Synthesis of diphenylmethanol. 4. Synthesis of ethyl acetate. 5. Synthesis of cinnamic acid. 6. Chemistry of polymers. 7. Resolution of alpha-phenylethylamine. 8. Column chromatography.

Students have (i) to attend the laboratory classes and perform the experiments planned by the Lecturer; (ii) to prepare a written report on the work developed in the course; (iii) to solve a set of exercises proposed by the Lecturer on the reactivity of functional groups or other alternative tasks; (iv) to pass a test on the theoretical-experimental concepts learnt in the course.

Students with special educational needs should contact the Student Attention Service (Servicio de Atención y Ayudas al Estudiante) in order to receive the appropriate academic support

Ordinary examination session:

(i) Attendance at laboratory classes (mandatory) and good performance of experiments: 10%. (ii) Evaluation of the written report on the work developed in the course: 15%. (iii) Implement of a proposed academic activity: 15%. (iv) Performance of a new experiment proposed by the Lecturer using a short recipe; evaluation of the corresponding written report: 60%.

Extraordinary examination session:

Students will be allowed to choose for the extraordinary exam one of the following options:

(A) Students must perform a new experiment proposed by the Lecturer using a short recipe, and present the corresponding written report. It will represent the 60% of the final mark. The remaining 40% comes from the previously evaluated sections i-iii.

(B) Students must perform a new experiment proposed by the Lecturer using a short recipe, and present the corresponding written report. It will represent the 100% of the final mark.

In this way it will be guaranteed the highest grade in this extraordinary and successive examination sessions.

In all cases students have to previously attend to all laboratory classes in order to have access to this extraordinary test.

Taking into account the number of students enrolled in this subject in past courses (around 45) and the number of laboratory groups scheduled (3) in the POD of the academic year 2020-21, it is probable that each group will contain about 15 students. It means that the limited capacity of the Organic Chemistry teaching laboratory will surely be exceeded. This means that, in a mixed scenario, will be necessary to divide each laboratory group into 2 small groups, in order to comply with safety measures and guarantee the sanitary guidelines issued by the competent authorities. In this case, each small group will attend in person the laboratory teaching for the half of the time, approximately, and will receive online the rest of credits, trying to ensure the students achieve the skills of the subject.

TEACHING METHODOLOGY AND TRAINING ACTIVITIES

-A2-Classes in laboratory groups (58 h): Each small group will receive classes in the laboratory for 7 sessions of 4 hours each. The explanations about the rest of the subject's content will be given online to the entire group of 15 students.

-A3-Tutorial classes (2 h): They will be taught by tele-teaching to the group of 15 students.

EVALUATION SYSTEM

-In the ordinary call II, the evaluation system included in the detailed information in section 7 of this teaching guide will be followed, keeping the percentages indicated therein. Part of this percentage, especially for those aspects of the evaluation related to a continuous evaluation, will be adjusted taking into account what is indicated in the non-face-to-face scenario (see below). The final exam for each subgroup will be achieved in person during one of the last two laboratory sessions.

-In the extraordinary call II (or successive calls) the evaluation system included in the detailed information in section 7 of this teaching guide will be followed.

RESOURCES

For telematic actions, the technical resources provided by the University will be used, including the ILIAS platform or the set of tools included in Google Suite, as well as electronic bibliographic resources to avoid the physical presence of students in the library. On the part of the students, communication infrastructure through the Internet will be necessary (computer, webcam, microphone and Internet access; alternatively, a smartphone can be used).

In the mixed scenario, where appropriate, the teaching staff involved in teaching, reserves the right not to give consent for the capture, publication, retransmission or reproduction of their speech, image, voice and professorship explanations, in the exercise of his teaching functions, within the scope of the University of Jaén.

TEACHING METHODOLOGY AND TRAINING ACTIVITIES

-A2-Classes in laboratory groups (58 h): Each lecturer will teach the classes by tele-teaching to its group of 15 students. The activities corresponding to M9 (Laboratories) will be replaced by online explanations on the fundamentals and experimental procedures of each experiment of the contents, for which it will be very helpful to watch videos on laboratory techniques and experiences very similar to those scheduled, and later remarks. In relation to M7 (Seminars), a session will be achieved to the explanation and clarification of doubts about the foundation and management in the laboratory of the techniques that should have been used in the face-to-face classes (distillation, recrystallization, thin layer chromatography,...) . Another session will also be devoted to the explanation by the students of the previously directed academic activity carried out in their autonomous work time.

-A3-Tutorial classes (2 h): They will be taught by tele-teaching to the group of 15 students.

 EVALUATION SYSTEM

-In the ordinary call II the evaluation system included in the detailed information in section 7 of this teaching guide will be followed, keeping the percentages indicated therein. In the Attendance and/or participation in face-to-face and/or virtual activities (10%) section, the teachers will check the attendance of their students to class and interest in the contents that are being explained by asking questions at random throughout each session. The daily achievement of the students will also be evaluated taking into account the fulfillment of the delivery deadlines of the laboratory notebook as well as their contribution to the created Forum. In the Theoretical concepts section of the subject (30%), the teachers will evaluate two aspects: (a) daily preparation by each student of the laboratory notebook (15% of the final grade); (b) academically directed activity (15% of the final grade). In the section Laboratory/field/TIC classes (60%), the teachers will evaluate the answers of the students in an online written exam about the theoretical and experimental aspects explained in class (30% of the final grade), as well as the answers in an oral examination by videoconference (30% of the final grade).

-In the extraordinary call II (or successive calls), the suspended students will have the possibility of being evaluated by one of the following modalities: (A) The suspended students must take an online written exam on the theoretical and experimental aspects explained in class, as well as an oral exam, both by videoconference, whose grade (60% of the final grade) will be weighted average with the different sections previously evaluated. (B) The suspended students must take an online written exam on the theoretical and experimental aspects explained in class, as well as an oral exam, both by videoconference, whose grade will constitute 100% of the final grade.

In both modalities, it must be taken into account that class attendance is compulsory, so suspended students must have previously attended them in order to be able to present themselves at this extraordinary and subsequent calls.

Purpose: In accordance with the Universities Law and other national and regional regulations in force, carrying out exams and assessment tests corresponding to the courses students are registered in. In order to avoid frauds while sitting the exam, the exam will be answered using a videoconference system, being able the academic staff of the University of Jaén to compare and contrast the image of the person who is answering the exam with the student's photographic files. Storage periods: those established in current in force regulations. In the specific case of exam videoconference recordings, not before the examination records and transcripts are closed or the exam can still be reviewed or challenged.
