Unit I: Initial stages of development in invertebrates: Introduction to the processes leading to the first stages of development in sea urchins, tunicate molluscs and nematodes. Early stages of development in vertebrates: amphibians, fish, birds, and mammals
Unit II: Basic principles in Embryology: Mechanisms of cellular specification. Morphogen gradients. Morphogenesis and cell adhesion. Cloning in mammals. Transgenic organisms. Generation of genetically modified animals. Pluripotent embryonic cells. Inductive phenomena. Paracrine factors. Cell surface receptors and their signalling pathways. Spatial pattern formation principles: Formation of embryonic axes. Origin of antero-posterior polarity. Generation of the dorso-ventral polarity.
Unit III: Derivatives of the ectoderm: Central nervous system. Neural crest. Development of the eye in vertebrates. Origin of the epidermis and skin appendages.
Unit IV: Derivatives of the mesoderm: Paraaxial and intermediate mesoderm (Somites and their derivatives. Urogenital system). Lateral mesoderm (formation of the heart and blood vessels)
Unit V: Derivatives of the endoderm: Pharynx. Gastrointestinal tract and its derivatives. Respiratory system. Extraembryonic membranes.
Unit VI: Differentiated cells and their stability. Tissues with permanent cells. Tissues with cell renewal: adult stem cells.
Didactic unit VII: Regeneration: limb regeneration in Vertebrates. The blastema: processes of dedifferentiation and redifferentiation.
Practical Activities: Analysis and observation of chicken embryonic development using different labeling techniques.
-Theorical concept exposition in large group
-Seminars (preparation of discussion works by the students)
-Practical classes: Embryo handling and tissue labelling using distinct approaches
Both in theory classes, as in laboratory practices and seminars, the use of mobile devices by the students may be limited depending on the criteria dictated by the teacher.
Students with special educational needs should contact the Student Attention Service (Servicio de Atención y Ayudas al Estudiante) in order to receive the appropriate academic support
Class Attendance (theory and practices) is compulsory and accounts for 20% of the final grade. Said that, evaluation will therefore be proportional to the degree of attendance by the student (eg attendance at all classes; 2 points; attendance at half the classes; 1 point)
Oral presentations, together with the work developed by the student in the seminars will represent 30% of the final grade.
Written exam accounts for 50% of the final grade.
To obtain the GLOBAL NOTE of the subject, it is compulsroy to obtain a grade equal to or greater than 5 points on the exam on the theoretical concepts of the subject.
If the subject is not approved as a whole in the ordinary call II (May-June), the mark of the passed parts will be kept for the extraordinary call II (June-July) and, if applicable, also for the ordinary call I (January) of the following year.
