3. CONTENT DESCRIPTION

This subject has an essential practical component, intended to develop the students' communicative skills in the oral domain (listening, speaking and interaction). The contents will then be divided into two blocks, one theoretical and one practical, where we will concentrate on the following topics:

 THEORY:

 THE GRAMMAR OF SPOKEN ENGLISH

CURRENT SPOKEN ENGLISH

DEVELOPING VOCABULARY AND FUNCTIONS IN ENGLISH

SPOKEN ENGLISH: FROM THEORY TO PRACTICE

PRACTICE:

We will follow the set coursebook (Miles Craven: Real Listening and Speaking 4), and complete it with some additional material for the practice of listening, speaking and interaction.

4. COURSE DESCRIPTION AND TEACHING METHODOLOGY

The methodology suggested for this subject will be student-centred, both in the theoretical and the practical classes. For the theory sessions, the students will be asked to read, before the class, material to be found in the subject's teaching platform; this work will be completed with activities in class. In the practical sessions, we will combine work on more receptive (activities having listening comprehension as a basis) and more productive areas (oral production and interaction).

Students with special educational needs should contact the Student Attention Service (Servicio de Atención y Ayudas al Estudiante) in order to receive the appropriate academic support

5. ASSESSMENT METHODOLOGY

There are three basic instruments for the assessment of this subject:

Regular attendance and participation. This will mean 20% of the final mark.

Final oral presentation. The main aspects to be considered for assessment here will be its originality, good use of spoken English and the work done in the preparation. This will mean 30% of the final mark.

Final written exam, about the theoretical and practical contents. Good use of English, precision in the definition of concepts and the inclusion of adequate examples to illustrate the explanations will be essential elements for the assessment of this component. This will be 50% of the final grade.

There will be an alternative evaluation plan for those students who cannot attend classes regularly, to assess blocks 1 and 2. These students must tell the teacher about this circumstance in the first four weeks of the course.

Likewise, those students who have previously failed the subject at least once will be assessed through the (written and oral) exam, if they choose to be assessed in that way.
