3. CONTENT DESCRIPTION

A) MORPHOSYNTACTIC CONTENTS

1. An introduction to the Arabic language.

2. Pronunciation and writing.

2.1. The Arabic alphabet: the consonants.

2.1.1. The weak letters.

2.1.2. Emphatic and non-emphatic letters.

2.1.3. Similar sounding letters.

2.1.4. The sun and the moon letters.

2.1.5. Connecting letters. The non-connector letters.

2.2. The orthographic signs: Pointing.

2.2.1. The vowels: fatha, kasra and damma (the short vowels and the long vowels; the doubled vowels or tanwin).

2.2.2. Other signs:  sukun (the diphthong),  shaddamaddawasla.

2.2.3.  HamzaAlif maqsuraTa` marbuta.

2.3. The punctuation.

2.4. The syllable and the stress.

3. Morphology.

3.1. Morphological categories: Verb, noun and particle. Root and pattern.

3.2. The noun. Classification. Morphosyntactic categories:

3.2.2. Number: singular, dual and plural. Types of plural. The sound plural.

3.2.3. Declension. Cases: nominative, accusative and genitive.

C) ARAB-ISLAMIC CULTURE AND SOCIETY

1. An introduction to Arab-Islamic culture and society.

4. COURSE DESCRIPTION AND TEACHING METHODOLOGY

Lectures with the whole group will be mainly devoted to the presentation of grammatical, lexical, functional and phonological concepts. Students are encouraged to take active part in class by asking questions.

As for practical lessons, they will be dedicated to the fulfillment of the textbook's exercises and additional materials. It is of paramount importance that students carry out class-time exercises and homework tasks. In addition, it is essential that they attend classes regularly and participate actively in class. 

Tutorials will let students be helped with specific issues on the course activities, as well as they will allow the lecturer to follow up their progress in the acquisition of knowledge and in the correct process of learning.

Students with special educational needs should contact the Student Attention Service (Servicio de Atención y Ayudas al Estudiante) in order to receive the appropriate academic support

5. ASSESSMENT METHODOLOGY

  1. Attendance and active participation (20%).
  2. Homework assignments and giving in of exercises on time (30%).
  3. A written final exam with an oral exercise about listening skills (50%).

Purpose: In accordance with the Universities Law and other national and regional regulations in force, carrying out exams and assessment tests corresponding to the courses students are registered in. In order to avoid frauds while sitting the exam, the exam will be answered using a videoconference system, being able the academic staff of the University of Jaén to compare and contrast the image of the person who is answering the exam with the student's photographic files. Likewise, in order to provide the exam with evidential content for revisions or claims, in accordance with current regulation frameworks, the exam will be recorded and stored.

Legitimacy: compliance with legal obligations (Universities Law) and other national and regional regulations currently in force.

Addressees: service providers who are the owners of the platforms where the exams are carried out and with whom the University of Jaén has signed the corresponding data access contracts.

Storage periods: those established in current in force regulations. In the specific case of exam videoconference recordings, not before the examination records and transcripts are closed or the exam can still be reviewed or challenged.

Rights: you can exercise your right of access, amendment, cancellation, opposition, suppression, limitation and portability by sending a letter to the postal or electronic address indicated above. In the event that you consider that your rights have been violated, you may submit a complaint to the Andalusian Council for Transparency and Data Protection www.ctpdandalucia.es
