Characteristics and components of the different cell types involved in muscle exercise and related physiopathological aspects. Energetic sources of muscle contraction. Metabolic responses to the different types of exercises. Biochemical adaptations to training. Practical knowledge on the subject.

Manipulation of instruments and basic laboratory equipment and knowledge of techniques for the determination and separation of biological molecules, analysis of cells, tissues and organs.

THEORY PROGRAM:

1. Introduction. Histological techniques Organization and
components of connective tissue
2. Tendon and ligament: histology and histopathology
3. Cartilague, bone and joints: histology and histopathology
4. Cellular biology of contraction and skeletal striated muscle:
histology
5. Growth, degeneration, and regeneration of skeletal striated
muscle cell: histopathology
6. Motor and sensory innervation of skeletal striated muscle:
clinical correlations

7.- Energy sources for muscle contraction.
8.- Energy metabolism during exercise: glucidic metabolism and its regulation.
9. Energy metabolism during exercise: lipid metabolism and its regulation.
10. Protein metabolism.
11. Metabolic response to different types of exercise and training.

PRACTICE PROGRAM:

1. Histological stains I
2. Histological stains II
3. Microscopic visualization and identification of histological
preparations of the musculoskeletal system I
4. Microscopic visualization and identification of histological
preparations of the musculoskeletal system II

5.- Determination of lactate dehydrogenase activity.
6.- Determination of glucose in serum . GOD-POD method.
7.- Isolation and enzymatic hydrolysis of liver glycogen.
8. -Glycolysis in cytoplasmic homogenates of liver and muscle.

4. COURSE DESCRIPTION AND TEACHING METHODOLOGY

Described previously

Students with special educational needs should contact the Student Attention Service (Servicio de Atención y Ayudas al Estudiante) in order to receive the appropriate academic support

5. ASSESSMENT METHODOLOGY

The theoretical contents of the subject will be evaluated by
two partial tests. These tests will be taken into account as long
as the score of 5 is exceeded in eachone of them. Those who do not
exceed this score will be required to submit to the final test in
which they will need to pass the correspondent part.

To evaluate practical sessions, attendance at each and every
session will be taken into account, and, where appropriate, the
presentation of the corresponding results.

The seminars will be mandatory and will be graded according to the
clarity of the presentation and / or the answers to the questions
asked.
