3. CONTENT DESCRIPTION

1. Biological functions of free radicals of oxygen, nitrogen and sulfur in cellular metabolism functions.
2. Chemistry of the oxygen molecule: excited forms and reduced forms.
3. Oxygen toxicity.
4. Biochemical reactivity of nitric oxide.
5. Enzymology of reactive oxygen species (ROS).
6. Enzymology of reactive nitrogen species (RNS).
7. Oxidative and nitrosative stress.
8. Cell damage and cytotoxicity.
9. Subcellular production of reactive oxygen (ROS) and nitrogen (RNS) species.
10.Producción of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species during cellular stress situations.
11.Nitric oxide role in biological systems. Biotechnological applications.
12.ROS, RNS and cell signaling in biomedicine.
13.Cellular systems of antioxidant defence. Biotechnological applications.

5. ASSESSMENT METHODOLOGY

Evaluation criteria:

Attendance and participation (10%) :

-Active participation in class.

-Participation in the debates

-Participation in the group work.

- Seminars (60%) : Discussion of different thematic content of the seminar done by the student to evaluate the acquisition of the contents of the subject, and the methodological level of understanding and ability of each student to the interpretation of the scientific literature.

- Laboratory Practices (30%) : Attendance to practical classes and delivery of a memory results of practical classes. It is considered mandatory attendance at practical classes and delivery of memory to pass the course.
