3. CONTENT DESCRIPTION

Introduce to students in the techniques related to animal cell cultures and their applications in the field of biomedical and biotechnology research. Knowledge of the importance of using cultured cells in clinical and industrial research

THEMATIC BLOCK I

  1. Introduction. Biology of cells in culture. Minimum equipment and practical considerations. The cell culture as an alternative to animal testing. 2. Types of cultures. Culture media. Substrates: role of the extracellular matrix. The role of serum in cell culture.
    3. Cell lines. Growth and maintenance of cells in culture. Subculture cell lines. Freezing and thawing.
    4. Cell synchronization. Stimulation by growth factors quiescence step -proliferation. Study of cell cycle.
    5. Cell differentiation
    6. Cell transfection.
    7. Using fluorescence microscopy and confocal microscopy in relation to cell culture. 
               

Knowing the basics and handling of different types of microscopes and its application in different fields of research, as well as the more usual methods of capturing and processing the images obtained.

THEMATIC BLOCK II

  1. The biological optical microscope. optical and mechanical components.
  2. Other types of optical microscopes, elements that comprise them, management and applications
  3. Electron microscopes: bases its operation and components.
  4. Methods for sample preparation bound for different types of electron microscopes.
  5. Technical specialized in detection and analysis applied to microscopy.
  6. Imaging systems in optical and electron microscopy
  7. Treatment and managing digital images.
  8. Basics of image analysis and management of applications that purpose
  9. Photographic reconstruction techniques in optical microscopy, both 2D and 3D
