3. CONTENT DESCRIPTION

1. Audiovisual Translation as specialised translation. General characteristics
1.1. Definition
1.2. Semiotic aspects (four channels: visual and acoustic, verbal and non-verbal).

2. Modalities of Audiovisual Translation
2.1. Subtitling
2.1.1. Technical aspects
2.1.2. Punctuation and other conventions (dash and hyphen, triple dots, quotation marks, italics, capital letters) 
2.1.3. Translation problems (definition, cultural references, puns)
2.2. Dubbing
2.2.1. Text segmentation and dubbing symbols  
2.2.2. Synchronization (lip-synch, kinesic, isochrony)
2.2.3. Acoustic and visual dimensions (paralinguistic features, songs, of- and on- screen sound; graphic codes)
2.2.4. Translation problems (dialects, idiolects, registers; paradox of the language of dubbing)

4. COURSE DESCRIPTION AND TEACHING METHODOLOGY

Apart from the fulfilment of diverse practical activities which students will have to send through the virtual teaching plataform and the elaboration of a final project, active participation in forums and tutorials is also considered an essential activity. As this course is totally online, autonomous learning is essential. In order to facilitate it, several learning modules have been designed in which several exercises and self-assessment tests are integrated. 

Students with special educational needs should contact the Student Attention Service (Servicio de Atención y Ayudas al Estudiante) in order to receive the appropriate academic support

5. ASSESSMENT METHODOLOGY

Assessment will be based on the fulfilment of practical activities (20%), which will be sent through the virtual teaching platform, the use of ICTs (participation in forums, use of subtitling programmes, etc.) (20%), and the elaboration of a final project (60%).

The final project will consist in the choice of a video clip containing diverse translation problems, the subtitling of the video clip, the elaboration of a commentary on the translation process, translation problems found, strategies used to solve those translation problems and technical aspects and subtitling conventions.
