1. Mineralogenesis. Classification, origin, and distribution of Earth materials (minerals and rocks). Mineral resources.
2. Geochemistry. Distribution and abundance of the elements in the Earth. Geochemistry of Earth surface processes.
3. Geometrical crystallography and simmetry. Crystallographic systems and lattices. Space group symmetry. Crystalmorphology.
4. Crystal Chemistry. Coordination geometry. Crystal Structures.Structural defects.
5. Crystallographic methods for the characterization of materials (Optical Crystallography, X-ray Diffraction, Scanning and Transmission Electron Microscopy).
6. Descriptive and applied mineralogy. Classification systems. Mineral groups.
Laboratory and practical classes:
- Study of symmetry with crystal models (symmetry elements and point group).
- Representing structures.
- Characterization of materials.
- Recognition of minerals in hand specimen.
Guided activities:
- Classification diagrams of geological materials.
- Problems of geochemistry.
- Problems of crystallography.
- Identification of minerals by optical properties.
- Calculation of mineral formulas from experimental data.
- Phase equilibrium diagrams.
Lectures (28 hours).
Laboratory and practical classes (24 hours):
- Study of symmetry with crystal models (symmetry elements and point group). (5 sessions).
- Representing structures. (1 session).
- Characterization of materials. (3 sessions).
- Recognition of minerals in hand specimen. (3 sessions).
Guided activities (6 hours):
- Classification diagrams of geological materials.

- Evaluation of practical activities and practical exam: 30%
