3. CONTENT DESCRIPTION

Chapter 1. Introduction to Developmental Psychology: Basic Concepts and Theories.

History of developmental psychology. Notion and main determinants of psychological development. Models and theories in developmental psychology.

Chapter 2. Introduction to Developmental Psychology: Methods.

Research designs in developmental psychology. Research techniques in developmental research. Ethical issues in research.


Chapter 3. Emotional Development.

Development of attachment. Emotional expression, understanding and regulation. Emotional development through the life span.

Chapter 4. Personality Development.

Temperament and personality development. Self-concept. Self-esteem. Identity.

Chapter 5. The Development of Morality.

Theories in the development of morality. Development of prosocial behaviours. Development of antisocial behaviours.

Chapter 6. Development in the Family Context.

Family as a context of development: structure and functions. Different types of families. Parental styles and patterns of family discipline.

Chapter 7. Development in the Context of Peer Groups.

Interactions among peers and friendship. Acceptance among peers and popularity. Aging and social support. Other social influences.

4. COURSE DESCRIPTION AND TEACHING METHODOLOGY

The content of this subject will be presented through lectures and group dynamics to promote students learning. 

Besides, small group sessions will be used to present practical activities and to establish relations among contents. In the small group sessions bibliography guided search will be required. These sessions will also include presentations of video documentaries, seminars or analysis of cases and published research.

All of these activities will be conducted in Spanish language. Students enrolled in this subject through the PATIE program will have all study materials and examinations in English.

Students with special educational needs should contact the Student Attention Service (Servicio de Atención y Ayudas al Estudiante) in order to receive the appropriate academic support

5. ASSESSMENT METHODOLOGY

The final qualification will be the summation of the qualifications in the final exam (70%), practical activities (20%) and class attendance and participation (10%). To pass the subject the student will have to pass the final exam and get a total qualification of 5 points.
