Lesson 1. Models in the experimental sciences and Geomatics.

Introduction. Geographic space and its knowledge. Geographical analysis. Characteristics and methods. Concept of territory. The territory as a system. Structure of the territorial system. Geomatics as an instrument of territorial analysis. Sources of spatial information. Processing of spatial information. Expression of spatial information. Application of spatial information.

Lesson 2. The treatment of spatial data. Geostatistical models.

Geomatics as a basic element in the modeling of natural resources. Data capture in modeling projects of natural resources. Geostatistical modeling of natural resources. Environmental monitoring. Theory of Regionalized Variables. Analysis of space continuity. Spatial inference. Stochastic simulation.

Lesson 3. Examples of modeling projects of natural resources.

Examples. Data to consider and data processing.

Lesson 4. Concepts of natural hazards and catastrophes. Hazard assessment.

Concepts and terminology. Natural hazards and catastrophes. Prediction and prevention. Classification of hazards. Impact of hazards. Processes. Hazards associated to internal geodynamics: seismic and volcanic. Hazards associated with external geodynamics: landslides, erosion, floods. Risk assessment and mapping.

Lesson 5. Natural hazards management and catastrophes.

Hazards management. Hazard and risk cycle. Preparation before the processes. Early warning systems. Response to the crisis. Civil protection. Intelligent systems for crisis management. Real-time evacuation and management plans. Measures for recovery.

Lesson 6. Geospatial platforms for crisis management.

Data and models in crisis management. Data capture for crisis management. Sensors. Operational data models. Models for navigation and evacuation. Space systems to support the decision. Map mashups, testimony and response services.

Practices:

Practice 1. Application of geostatistical methods.

Practice 2. Examples of analysis and evaluation of hazards: seismic and landslides.

Practice 3. Example of navigation in a crisis scenario. Navigation with obstacles and mobile obstacles.

4. COURSE DESCRIPTION AND TEACHING METHODOLOGY

The theory classes will be developed through keynote expositions of the theoretical concepts of the subject, in a participative environment, with presentation of applications and examples.

The practice classes will allow the accomplishment of exercises on natural resources and hazards, in a computer classroom and by means of GIS and specific software for modelling.

Students with special educational needs should contact the Student Attention Service (Servicio de Atención y Ayudas al Estudiante) in order to receive the appropriate academic support

5. ASSESSMENT METHODOLOGY

With the theory exam, the competences CB6, CB7, CB9, CG1IGEO, CG2IGEO, CG3IGEO, CG4IGEO, CT1, CT2, CT5, E06MIGEO, E07MIGEO, E09MIGEO are evaluated.

Results RB6, RB7a, RG1IGEO, RG2IGEO, RG3IGEO, RG4IGEO, RT1, RT2, RT5, RE06MIGEO, RE07MIGEO, RE09MIGEO.

With the accomplishment of practices, the competences CB6, CB7, CB9, CB10, CG1IGEO, CG2IGEO, CG3IGEO, CT1, CT2, CT4, CT5, E06MIGEO, E07MIGEO, E09MIGEO, E10MIGEO are evaluated.

Results: RB6, RB7a, RB7b, RB7c, RB10, RG1IGEO, RG3IGEO, RT1, RT2, RT4, RT5, RE06MIGEO, RE07MIGEO, RE09MIGEO, RE10MIGEO.

With the attendance and participation, the competences CB7, CB9, CG1IGEO, CG4IGEO, CT4, CT5, E06MIGEO.

Results: RB7a, RB9, RG1IGEO, RG4IGEO, RT4, RT5, RE06MIGEO.

To pass the subject will be necessary to pass the theory exam and the practical work of the subject, independently.

The final score of the subject will be calculated taking into account the weighting of each of the parts (theory and practices).
