3. CONTENT DESCRIPTION

  1. Polarizing microscope by transmitted and reflected light. Optical properties of minerals. Textural relationships.
  2. X-ray diffraction. Interaction of X-rays with crystalline matter. Qualitative and semiquantitative analysis of mineral phases.
  3. Electron microscopy. Scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Punctual chemical analysis. Electron microprobe.
  4. Applications of elemental analysis techniques in geological materials. Data treatment.

Laboratory and practical clases:

  • Optical microscopy.
  • X-ray preparation.
  • Visit to the diffractometer at the CICT.
  • Visit to the SEM at the CICT.

Guided activities:

Integration of data from different techniques for the characterization of materials and the resolution of environmental problems.

4. COURSE DESCRIPTION AND TEACHING METHODOLOGY

Lectures (30 hours).

Laboratory and practical classes (20 hours):

  • Sessions 1-7. Optical microscopy practices.
  • Session 8. Preparation of samples for XRD.
  • Session 9. Visit to the diffractometer at the CICT.
  • Session 10. Visit to the SEM at the CICT.

Guided activities (8 hours):

  • Identification of minerals using XRD.
  • Structural analysis using XRD.
  • Semi-quantitative analysis using XRD.
  • Software PLX for the analysis of XRD data.
  • Interpretation of TEM images.
  • SEM microanalysis.
  • Spectroscopic techniques.
