3. CONTENT DESCRIPTION

 

  1. Fundamentals of hydrogeology. Hydrology and hydrogeology. The hydrologic cycle and the hydrologic equation. Properties of Earth materials: porosity, specific yield and permeability. Water content of soil and groundwater recharge.
  2. Hydrometeorology and surface hydrology. Evaporation, transpiration and evapotranspiration. Measurement of precipitation. Runnoff and streamflow: hydrograph separation, rainfall-runnoff relationships and measurement of streamflow.
  • Principles of groundwater flow. Aquifers: characteristics, water table and potentiometric surface maps. Springs. Darcy's law: gradient of hydraulic head and hydraulic conductivity. Applicability of Darcy's law and specific discharge. Permeameters. Heterogeneity and anisotropicity. Flow lines and flow nets. Refraction of flow lines.
  1. Chemical hydrogeology. Chemical composition of groundwater, groundwater sampling and graphical presentation of hydrochemical data.Mine water pollution and remediation: mine water chemistry, assessment of contamination loads and treatment of polluted mine waters.
  2.   Regional groundwater flow.

4. COURSE DESCRIPTION AND TEACHING METHODOLOGY

Research, development, management, and sustainability analysis of hydrogeological projects. Water in mining: quantitative and qualitative aspects. Analysis of case studies.

5. ASSESSMENT METHODOLOGY

Exam paper combined with a written report of field activities.
