1) Review of pipe flows: head losses, Moody diagram.

2) Piping systems:  Simple pipes, pipes in series and in parallel. Water distribution systems. Development of methods of solving mesh networks and their numerical implementation.

3) Introduction to the gas flow in ducts. Convergent-Divergent nozzles. Shock waves. Effect of friction and heat addiction.

4) Introduction to hydraulic machines. Description of the operating conditions.

5) Open channel flow. Uniform and gradually varied flow. Drain through holes, sluices and weirs. Hydraulic jump.

6) Introduction to numerical methods in fluid mechanics. Application to turbomachines.

4. COURSE DESCRIPTION AND TEACHING METHODOLOGY

Theoretical and practical sessions, including resolution of exercises, will be carried out. Besides basic concepts of numerical simulation with application to turbomachinery will be discussed. Several practical laboratory sessions, that include the analysis of water distribution systems and studies of flows in open channels.

Students with special educational needs should contact the Student Attention Service (Servicio de Atención y Ayudas al Estudiante) in order to receive the appropriate academic support

5. ASSESSMENT METHODOLOGY

The competences will be evaluated through the different instruments considered in the evaluation system. To pass the course it is mandatory to obtain a grade equal to or greater than 5 points out of 10 in the written test. Additionally, attendance at all lab classes is required to be able to take the written test.
