3. CONTENT DESCRIPTION

BLOCK 1: Soil Concept.
BLOCK 2: Genesis, Morphology, Edaphogenetic soil forming processes in olive grove.
BLOCK 3. Components, physical and chemical environment of the root of the olive tree, physico-chemical and chemical soil properties of olive groves, Incidence of organic matter in the soil properties of olive and chemical soil fertility.
BLOCK 4. Soil Science Applied in the olive grove, Typologies, degradation, conservation of water and soil recovery of olive trees, soil evaluation of olive grove.
Practices in Laboratory: Particle size analysis, pH, electrical conductivity and the presence of gypsum, soil organic matter content, calcium carbonate and active lime.
Technical tour. Excursion to an olive grove with highly degraded soil.

4. COURSE DESCRIPTION AND TEACHING METHODOLOGY

During the lectures it will be presented in a reasoned way the contents and scope of the subject, giving real examples of practices of soil management in various situations (i.e. conventional and organic olive grove) and will be discussed critically the recommended bibliography. In laboratory lectures will become familiar with basic determinations in the field of soil fertility on specific samples of olive grove soils. It will work in solving exercises and preparation of work (preferably single type), under the premise of the teacher-student interactivity.

Students with special educational needs should contact the Student Attention Service (Servicio de Atención y Ayudas al Estudiante) in order to receive the appropriate academic support

5. ASSESSMENT METHODOLOGY

The main part of the evaluation will be by written examination, although it will be very important the involvement of students through questions in class, delivery of solved exercises and preparation and presentation of additional work; in addition to the development of practical laboratory and field contents.
