3. CONTENT DESCRIPTION

BLOCK 1. Soil Genesis and mapping. Unit 1. Introduction. Unit 2. Processes and soil-forming factors in Mediterranean areas. Unit 3. Soil classification. Main types of Mediterranean soils. Unit 4. Principles of soil mapping.

BLOCK 2. Processes specific degradation of Mediterranean soils. Unit 5. Quality and Soil Health. Degradation processes of physical, chemical and biological soil quality. Physical and historical soil characteristics of the Mediterranean basin. Unit 6. Principles for land evaluation and quality assessment and health of Mediterranean soils. Main evaluation systems. Application of soil quality indices.

BLOCK 3. Processes specific degradation of Mediterranean soils. Unit 7. Degradation of physical soil quality. Water erosion. Effects on soil of forest fires. Unit 8. Degradation of chemical soil quality and contamination processes in Mediterranean soils. Biological degradation of soil quality. Unit 9. Degradation excess salts. Salinization and Sodification.

BLOCK 4. Techniques of restoration and rehabilitation of Mediterranean soils. Unit 10. Restoration of degraded by agricultural activity. Conservation of soil against erosion. Unit 11. Rehabilitation of degraded soils. Restoration of rills. Rehabilitation of acidified soils: liming. Rehabilitation of saline and sodic soils.

4. COURSE DESCRIPTION AND TEACHING METHODOLOGY

The course consists of several thematic blocks. These include theoretical topics (which will be explained in large-group lectures) and practical activities (small group). The latter group laboratory practice (4 sessions) and field (2 days). The general procedure of the subject to give each block will expose the theory, and then, perform the practices associated with that subject block, before moving to the next.

5. ASSESSMENT METHODOLOGY

Exam of theory: objective test to verify the domain of theoretical and operational knowledge of the subject (80% of total grade). Competencies evaluated, CE-51 and CT-24.

Presentation of works: In each work will be discussed: Structure of work; Quality of documentation; Originality; Spelling and presentation (20% of total grade). Competencies evaluated, EC-39, EC-6 and CT-24.
