4. COURSE DESCRIPTION AND TEACHING METHODOLOGY

PATIE PROGRAMME

Lectures with the whole group will be mainly devoted to the presentation of grammatical, lexical, functional and phonological concepts in the five units on the part of the teacher. Students are encouraged to critically read the set readings, as well as to take active part in class by asking questions and by making critical appreciations regarding the theoretical lessons.

As for practical lessons, the whole group is divided into two (with three weekly hours with each one) and will deal with textbook and workbook exercises, together with additional materials.

It is essential that students prepare those exercises at home in advance and participate actively in class by giving the answers and proposing alternative possibilities. Some time will also be devoted to oral presentations and debates concerning the issues dealt with in the different units.

Tutorials will be both individual and in groups, and at least one hour per week will be assigned to group tutorial attention.

Students with special educational needs should contact the Student Attention Service (Servicio de Atención y Ayudas al Estudiante) in order to receive the appropriate academic support

5. ASSESSMENT METHODOLOGY

PATIE PROGRAMME

Assessment methodology and criteria:

-       Active participation in class, in the debates and in group work activities by means of teacher observation (20%).

-       Mastering of the theoretical and operative concepts in the course by means of a written test and an oral examination (50%: 40% in the case of the written exam; 10% for the listening comprehension paper):

a)     In the written test students will be assessed on their writing and reading and it will consist of questions regarding lexical and conceptual contents in exercises of reading comprehension, vocabulary, grammar, functions, and writing. This is a qualifying exam.

b)     Oral examination: only students who have passed the written test will qualify for the oral exam, in which they will be assessed on their listening skills by means of a listening test.

-       Homework assignments [2 compulsory compositions are worth 15% of the final mark, that is to say, each is 7,5%] and oral presentations in class [these are done in groups and are worth 15% of the final mark] (30%).

Continuous assessment (20% for active participation [including, among others, 2 optional compositions] and 30% for assignments and presentations) will be taken into account and added to the remaining 50% only if the students pass the examinations (by obtaining at least 5 out of 10).
