Content description

Unit I: Introduction to Geriatrics: general concepts. Demographic factors.

 

Unit II: Physiotherapeutic assessment and intervention in Geriatrics (Main geriatric syndromes).

 

Unit III: Integration and contribution of physiotherapist in the care and environment of the older people.

 

UNIT I

Lesson 1 : Concept of Geriatrics and Gerontology.

Lesson 2: Theories of aging and its biological foundations. The process of human aging.

Lesson 3: Demographic evolution of the population in Spain and Andalusia. Policies, institutions and services involved with the population. Fragile in geriatric population.

Dependence on older people.

 

UNIT II

Lesson 1: Functional assessment and physiotherapeutic diagnosis in older people.

Lesson 2: Physical activity in older people.

Lesson 3: Balance and gait in older people, immobilisation syndrome. Falls.

Lesson 4: Physiotherapeutic techniques in disabling developmental orthopedic diseases.

Lesson 5: Physiotherapeutic techniques in posttraumatic, postsurgical syndromes. Amputations.

Lesson 6: Physiotherapeutic techniques in cardiovascular diseases or disabilities.

Lesson 7: Physiotherapeutic techniques in respiratory diseases or disabilities.

Lesson 8: Physiotherapeutic techniques in neurodegenerative diseases: Alzheimer, Dementia, Parkinson.

 

UNIT III

Lesson 1: Integration and contribution of the physiotherapist to multidisciplinary team of the comprehensive care in older people.

Lesson 2: Criteria of assessment in physical and social environments in older people in relation to functional assessment.

Lesson 3: Contributions of the Physiotherapy in the health promotion for older people.

Lesson 4: Physiotherapeutic attention addressed to geriatric caregivers. Promote-education in the self-care.

4. COURSE DESCRIPTION AND TEACHING METHODOLOGY

Methodology and activities

Activity 1: Masterclasses to the general group.

 

Activity 2: Subject-related classworks in small groups: search and prepare information and use of ICT (Information and Communications Technology)

 

Activity 3: Active participation in the practical classes, developing knowledge, skills and abilities for physiotherapeutic treating in older people

5. ASSESSMENT METHODOLOGY

The evaluation consists of 3 variables with weight in the percentage indicated:

 

-Written exercise about subject of a course: 50%

 

-Classworks in small groups: 30%

 

-Continuous evaluation in the practical contents: 20%
