THEORY

LESSON 0. Introduction of the subject.

Introduction to the teaching calendar, teaching methodology and booklist.

LESSON 1. Economic aspects of PV systems.

Introductory concepts. Profitability índices aimed at assessing the investment on a PV Project. Financial dimensión of the investment on a PV Project. The discount rate and capital equivalence. Effect of the inflation rate. Economic measures aimed at promoting PV systems. PV systems vs. another rural electrification techniques from a economic viewpoint. PV grid connected systems and profitability criteria: DPBT, NPV, IIR and Benefit-to-Cost ratio. Economic and financial feasibility of PV projects. Taxation impact, operation insurance. Costa analysis in PV grid connected systems. Levelized Cost of Electricity (LCOE): grid parity in the retail market and in the wholesale market.

LESSON 2. Energy analysis and characterization of PV systems.

Introduction to energy processes that take place in PV systems: measured parameters (irradiance, ambient temperatura, wind speed, PV field voltaje and current, etc.), calculated parameters (global irradiation and  performance índices) . Causes of energy losses in PV systems: the case of PV grid connected systems. Analysis of monitoring files. Sankey diagrams.

LESSON 3. Monitorization of PV systems.

The need of monitorization and used methods. Devices involved in a PV monitoring and control system. State of the art of PV monitoring and control systems.

LESSON 4. PV system commisioning, manteinance and insurance.

PV system commisioning. Preventive and corrective manteinance. PV system warranties. Initial and periodic tests in PV systems

LESSON 5. Assesment of PV systems: cases of study.

The need for assessment in PV grid-connected systems. Introductory concepts. Documentation requirements. Inspection. Electrical measurements in PV module strings. Inverter tests and measurement of the PV field peak power. Isolation resistance and earth electrode measurements. Thermal imaging.

LAB WORK

SESSION 1. Economic aspects of PV systems.

PV systems vs. another rural electrification techniques from a economic viewpoint.   Calculation of profitability criteria (DPBT, NPV, IIR and Benefit-to-Cost ratio) according to different economic scenarios (loans, bonds. Device depreciation, the impact of taxation, etc.) by means of MS EXCEL spreadsheeet (Laboratory of the Department of Electronics and Automation Engineering)

SEESSION 2. Monitorization

Cases of study: PV grid-connected systems in the UJA (Labs. A3-451 and A3-515. Analysis of PV grid-connected system monitoring files by means of MS EXCEL spreadsheeet (Laboratory of the Department of Electronics and Automation Engineering)

SEESSION 3. Techical assesment of a PV grid-connected system.

Visiting a 100-kW PV system located in the “Olivares” PV farm. Inspection, on-field data measurement according to the UNE-IEC 62446 standard: a) PV module strings: load and open circuit voltage, load and short circuit current, b) Isolation measurements, c) thermal imaging, etc. Production of final verification report.

4. COURSE DESCRIPTION AND TEACHING METHODOLOGY

Theory class attendance is not mandatory. Lab work attendance is mandatory: students must work in pairs to put the theoretical concepts into practice. During practical session 3, on-field inspection and measurements will be carried out on a real 100-kW PV system, so that a final verification report according to IEC 62446 standard must be produced by each pair of students.

Students with special educational needs should contact the Student Attention Service (Servicio de Atención y Ayudas al Estudiante) in order to receive the appropriate academic support

5. ASSESSMENT METHODOLOGY

Both the theory and practical exams must be passed in order to pass the subject.

Competences CB1, CT1, CT2, CC5 y CEX5 are assessed by means of the theory exam, while the same competences CB1, CT1 CT2, CC5 y CEX5 are assessed by means of the practical exam. Learning results R75, R76, R77, R78, R79 y R80 will be achieved through these two exams.

Last, competences CT1, CT2, CC5 y CEX5are assesssed by carrying out a technical assessment of a PV grid connected system. Learning results R75, R76, R77, R78 and R80 will be achieved through this technical assessment.
