1. Introduction to microbes in the environment. A historical perspective 2. General features of microbes. Methodological aspects 3. Energy metabolism and nutrition in Prokaryotes 4. Bacterial growth: influence of environmental factors 5. Phenotypic and genetic changes in microbial cells 6. Microbial diversity: evolution, systematics and microbial classification 7. Microbial groups of environmental interest 8. Distribution of microbes in the biosphere. Interaction with biogeochemical cycles 9. Microbial interactions 10. Environmental applications of microbes

4. COURSE DESCRIPTION AND TEACHING METHODOLOGY

Lectures that illustrate the body of main contents of the subject. The students can get access to Powerpoint class presentations and do their homework study with the recommended bibliography. Practical activities in the Microbiology lab. Tutorial classes where students can discuss in group on their main interests and difficulties found regarding this subject

5. ASSESSMENT METHODOLOGY

Evaluation will be based on the degree of assimilation of theoretical concepts. Students must have at least 50% of maximum qualification on this point. Practical activities in the Microbiology lab are mandatory. These will be evaluated according to the student´s degree of participation in the lab activities.
