SEMINAR: MICROBIOLOGICAL DIAGNOSIS

-          Sample collection from: blood, sterile liquids, airways, eyes and ears, lesions, tissues, urine, feces and genital tract.

-          Detection and identification of pathogens: Microscopy, detection of antigens, detection of nucleic acids, culture and serology.

-          Susceptibility to antimicrobials: agar diffusion test and broth micro-dilution method

LABORATORY CLASSES:

- General and specific culture media

- Isolation and identification of human pathogens from urine and respiratory tract

- Resistance of bacteria to antimicrobials

- Guided visit to the Microbiology Unit of Hospital "Ciudad de Jaén". 

4. COURSE DESCRIPTION AND TEACHING METHODOLOGY

- Lecture (Theory): Tutorial session, proposal and correction of activities and exercises in English (in presence of professor or virtual): 1 hour per week.

- Lecture (Practice): Tutorial session, supply of press material (in presence of professor or virtual): 1 hour per week.

- Homework: 4 hours per week.

Attendance to laboratory classes is mandatory. Voluntary activities are also proposed in the Virtual Platform of University of Jaén.

Tutorial support sessions, materials and exams in English. For regular spanish students the default teaching language will be Spanish. Exchange international students can electively join regular courses in Spanish whenever they wish.

Students with special educational needs should contact the Student Attention Service (Servicio de Atención y Ayudas al Estudiante) in order to receive the appropriate academic support

5. ASSESSMENT METHODOLOGY

Theory will be evaluated with a written exam and a term paper. Attendance to laboratory classes is mandatory. Voluntary activities are also proposed in the Virtual Platform of University of Jaén.
