3. CONTENT DESCRIPTION

Unit 1. Theories and models on cognitive development. Explaining cognitive development. Piaget’s theory. Vygotsky’s approach. Information processing and developmental cognitive neuroscience.

Unit 2. Development of perception and action. Perception-action systems and their role in cognition. Research procedures on perceptual development. Vision and hearing in childhood. Functional and structural changes in vision and hearing with aging

Unit 3. Development of attention. A neurocognitive model of attention. Development of attentional networks: orienting, alerting and executive control across the lifespan

Unit 4. Development of memory. Measuring memory across the lifespan. Learning and memory in utero. Experimental paradigms and basic results of memory research with infants. Memory changes in childhood and adolescence. Memory and aging.

Unit 5. Conceptual development and thinking. Knowledge representation and conceptual development. Age-related changes in solving problem abilities. Development of reasoning.

Unit 6. Development of language. Theories on language development. Phonological, semantic, grammatical and pragmatics development. Language comprehension and production with aging. 

4. COURSE DESCRIPTION AND TEACHING METHODOLOGY

Lessons attendance is strongly recommended. Teaching works on a 3-hours-per-week basis regarding large group classes and on a 1-hour-every-2-weeks basis regarding small groups. The attendance-autonomous work hours ratio is 1/1.5 for large groups and 1/4 for small groups.

Students with special educational needs should contact the Student Attention Service (Servicio de Atención y Ayudas al Estudiante) in order to receive the appropriate academic support

5. ASSESSMENT METHODOLOGY

Class attendance and class participation during contact hours and through the virtual campus will be taken into account. The students will elaborate different activities derived from practice lectures. There will be a final written exam. Class attendance and participation will make up to 10% of the final mark. The practice activities will be worth up to 20% of the mark and the final exam will be the remaining 70%.
