3. CONTENT DESCRIPTION

This subject has an essential practical component, intended to develop the students' communicative skills in the oral domain (listening, speaking and interaction). The contents will then be divided into two blocks, one theoretical and one practical, where we will concentrate on the following topics:

THEORY:

1. THE GRAMMAR OF SPOKEN ENGLISH

2. CURRENT SPOKEN ENGLISH

3. DEVELOPING VOCABULARY AND FUNCTIONS IN ENGLISH

4. SPOKEN ENGLISH: FROM THEORY TO PRACTICE

PRACTICE:

We will follow the set coursebook, and complete it with some additional material for the practice of listening, speaking and interaction.

4. COURSE DESCRIPTION AND TEACHING METHODOLOGY

The methodology suggested for this subject intends to combine teacher-centred and student-centred activities (for the first, the theory sessions; for the second, the practical block). In this last block, we will combine work on more receptive (activities having listening comprehension as a basis) and more productive areas (oral production and interaction).

Students with special educational needs should contact the Student Attention Service (Servicio de Atención y Ayudas al Estudiante) in order to receive the appropriate academic support

5. ASSESSMENT METHODOLOGY

There are three basic instruments for the assessment of this subject:

  1. Regular attendance and participation, especially in the practical sessions. This will mean 20% of the final mark.
  2. Final oral presentation. The main aspects to be considered for assessment here will be its originality, good use of spoken English and the work done in the preparation. This will mean 30% of the final mark.
  3. Final written exam, about the theoretical and practical contents. Good use of English, precision in the definition of concepts and the inclusion of adequate examples to illustrate the explanations will be essential elements for the assessment of this component.

There will be an alternative evaluation plan for those students who cannot attend classes regularly, to assess blocks 1 and 2. These students must tell the teacher about this circumstance in the first four weeks of the course.
