  2.  Medieval drama: a.Material and historical conditions of medieval drama b. Mysteries and moralities. Reading:The Second Shepherds Play (Norton Anthology of English Literature, vol. 1).
  3. Elizabethan and Jacobean drama. a. Elizabethan drama b. Public theatre and identity construction. c. Religion, economy and politics in early modern drama. Reading: William Shakespeare's Macbeth.
  4. Late Victorian drama. a. The Victorian period: history, culture, ideology and society. b. Containment vs subversion in late Victorian drama. Reading: Oscar Wilde's The Importance of Being Ernest.
  5. Twentieth century drama. a. African drama. b. Contemporary theatre and the criticism of colonialism. Reading: Wole Soyinka's The Lion and the Jewel.

4. COURSE DESCRIPTION AND TEACHING METHODOLOGY

Workload: 150 hours.

5. ASSESSMENT METHODOLOGY

  1. There will be one final class essay which will provide 50% of the final grades. This essay will consist of: writing an essay (out of a choice of two), and commenting a number of excerpts from the plays read and discused in class. [Competences and Learning Outcomes: S1-E11/E12/E21-R12/R13/R18]
  2. Students will also be required to present orally a topic in front of the class (10-15 minutes) (30% of the total grades). The topic of this presentation will have to be previouslyapproved by the lecturer. [Competences and Learning Outcomes:S2-G3/G5/G8-R3/R8/R5]
  3. Finally, attendance and participation in class discussion will provide the additional 20%; a minimum of 70% attendance will be required to be able to obtain this 20%.[Competences and Learning Outcomes: S3-E11/E12/E21/G3/G5/G8-R12/R13/R18/R3/R8/R5]
