3. CONTENT DESCRIPTION

Contents per unit

 

Unit 1. Ask the public

Vocabulary: words with different but related meanings; word pairs; dramatic verbs.

Grammar: formal and informal ways of comparing; position of adverbials.

Reading: quirky behaviour; advertising is dead - long live advertising!; a short story extract.

Listening: four friends talking about quirky behaviour; people talking about advertising campaigns; Professor John McRae talking about short stories; a short story extract.

Speaking: speaking about unusual habits; discussing effective advertising campaigns; telling a story.

Writing: connecting words (purpose); punctuation (colons and semi-colons); writing a short story for a radio programme.

 

Unit 2. Laying down the law

Vocabulary: phrases with 'get'; phrasal nouns; metaphors.

Grammar: conditionals (non-basic forms); impersonal report structures.

Reading: it's a hard life!; we'll be watching you!; a crime statistics webpage.

Listening: interview with a science journalist; people discussing 'state intervention' in their countries; extract from a play; two people giving their opinion about crime down under.

Speaking: discussing open and closed prisons; reporting and giving opinions on news headlines; role play; crime in your country.

Writing: connecting words (condition); punctuation (commas); a letter about how to reduce crime.

 

Unit 3. What's stopping you?

Vocabulary: phrases with 'time', 'wherever', 'whoever', 'whatever'; word building (suffixes); idiomatic phrases.

Grammar: past verb foms with present or future meaning.

Reading: one person can make a difference...; feel the fear; a modern poem: 'The pros and cons'.

Listening: Eddy Canfor-Dumas talking about an environmental campaigner; a radio programme about emotions; people discussing whether it is better to be a man or a woman.

Speaking: choosing a famous person to spend an evening with; discussing things that frigthen you; class survey about gender.

Writing: connecting words (comment adverbials); spelling (commonly misspelled words); a report on the results of a survey.

 

Topic 4. Cash

Vocabulary: 'price' and 'cost'; word building (productive suffixes); news and economics.

Grammar: simple versus continuous (verbs with different meanings); 'a'/'an' versus 'one'; 'few', 'a few', 'quite a few'.

Reading: have you got experience?; mobile phones, the new cash?; a fundraising advice website.

Listening: can money buy you happiness?; a radio programme about Satish Kumar; a lecture describing the importance of economics; an interview about organising charity events.

Speaking: discussion about experiences versus possessions; evaluating how long you could survive without money; giving a two-minute talk; a persuasive argument.

Writing: conecting words (reason and result); spelling ('-ible' or '-able'); a leaflet asking for support for a charity.

 

Unit 5. The key to success

Vocabulary: noun collocations; antonyms; colloquial language.

Grammar: subject-verb agreement; modal verbs (levels of certainty about the past, the present and future).

Reading: pushing the envelope; work with the best...; is this the fastest track to fluency? 

Listening: a radio programme about inventions; people discussing the secret of success; people talking about their language-learning strategies.

Speaking: prioritising useful inventions; discussing achievements; discussion about your future language-learning strategies.

Writing: an action plan for improving your English.

4. COURSE DESCRIPTION AND TEACHING METHODOLOGY

This course has a practical orientation. In the weekly whole-group session, the teacher will explain the most important aspects of each unit, following the contents in the last five units in the book 'Face2face Advanced'. In the three practice sessions per week, where students will be asked to be active participants, tasks and exercises will be done or revised related to grammatical aspects, vocabulary, use of English, as well as to the development of the four skills (speaking, writing, listening and speaking).

Students with special educational needs should contact the Student Attention Service (Servicio de Atención y Ayudas al Estudiante) in order to receive the appropriate academic support

5. ASSESSMENT METHODOLOGY

The mark obtained in the continuous assessment (attendance and participation, 20% + oral presentations and written texts, 30%) will be added up to the mark obtained in the written examination (50%) provided that the student passes the written exam (to pass an exam the student is required to obtain, at least, 5 points out of 10 in the exam).
