3. CONTENT DESCRIPTION

This course aims to provide an introduction to several essential tasks for music teachers: tools to plan music lessons, approach to the main educational methods, the creation and compilation of specialized resources for teaching and learning music as well as an introduction to the innovation and research on Music Education topics, which is quite relevant to the future development of the profession. The main areas of the course are: 

  1. Introduction. Music in Primary Education.
  2. Planning in Music Education. Planning elements: how, where, when. Practical examples.
  3. Musical Education methods: from major international methods to recent contributions in Spain.
  4. Analysis and study of specific resources for Music Education: from perception to performance.
  5. Research on Music Education: discussion of a relevant range of research innovative methodologies and their application to diverse topics in music education theory and practice.

4. COURSE DESCRIPTION AND TEACHING METHODOLOGY

Active learning methodology including daily activities, presentations, listenings and exercises (both individual and collective) related to the theoretical and practical contents. The diversity of learning methodologies contains theory lessons (bigger groups), practical lessons (smaller groups) and specialized single tutorials. Final e xam paper.

Students with special educational needs should contact the Student Attention Service (Servicio de Atención y Ayudas al Estudiante) in order to receive the appropriate academic support

5. ASSESSMENT METHODOLOGY

1. ATTENDANCE AND ATTITUDE (10%) Student attendance to in-person classes, tutorials and seminars planned throughout the academic year, as well as participation and attitude. 2. THEORETICAL CONTENT (40%) Pass the written theoretical exam on both theoretical and practical contents of the program. Above all it will be considered the capacity for analysis and comparison of different methods, techniques and teaching resources in music education in order to assume the appropriate methodology of the area. 3. PRACTICES, PROJECT AND PAPERS (50%) Realization of practical activities, elaboration-presentation of papers and self-training activities. It will be mainly appreciated the: • Learning ability and collaborative work (in the case of group tasks), as well as the personal effort. • Diversity of sources and formal presentation (cleaning, formatting, etc.) of writen papers. • Ability to generate new ideas and to elaborate musical resources, didactic proposals and research projects in a creative and innovative way. • Ability to design, plan and manage music activities, classroom programs, lesson plans and educational projects, demonstrating knowledge of the legislative framework concerning music education in Primary Education. • Understanding and critical evaluation of the proposed materials (articles, books, videos, etc.) to encourage discussion in class. EVALUATION The final grade is the sum of the marks obtained in the theoretical exam (40%), in practical and self-training activities (50%), and in attendance and attitude (10%). It is necessary to pass each part separately; if not, the final grade will be fail.
