Overwiew of Bioinorganic Chemistry. Essential Chemical Elements. Metal Functions in Biological Systems. Principles of Coordination Chemistry and related to Bioinorganic Chemistry: Thermodynamic and kinetic aspects. Biochemistry Fundamentals: Proteins and their Constituents. Nucleic Acids and their Constituents. Other Metal-Binding Biomolecules. Metal Ions Transport and Storage. Biomineralization Processes. O 2 and N Biological Activation Processes. Iron containing Biomolecules: Haem-proteins, non-haem proteins, siderophores. Cooper Proteins and Enzymes. Molybdenum Enzymes. Vitamine B12 and Coenzyme B12. Zinc Proteins and Enzymes. Biological role of other transition metals: Vanadium, Chromium, Manganese and Nickel. Biological role of Alkaline and Alkaline-earth Metals. Non metallic elements in biology. Bioinorganic Chemistry in Medicine. Toxicity of Inorganic Systems. 

4. COURSE DESCRIPTION AND TEACHING METHODOLOGY

The language used in the teaching of this matter is Spanish. English language will be used only for tutorial sessions and exams.

 

Lecture (Theory): Oral exposition of the theoretical contents of the course by the lecturer, using audiovisual methods.

 

Lecture (Practice): Students perform several laboratory experiments and develop a laboratory notebook.

 

Seminars: Oral presentations by students, resolution of exercices, literature searches.

 

Homework: Study of theoretical contents and preparation of exercices and oral presentations.

 

Tutorial sessions for doubts resolution if necessary

5. ASSESSMENT METHODOLOGY

Written exam on the theoretical and practical course.

Aattendance at all laboratory sessions.

Resolution of exercices and preparation of oral presentations.
