3. CONTENT DESCRIPTION

1. Geometrical crystallography and simmetry. Crystallographic systems and lattices. Space group symmetry. Crystal morphology.

2. Crystal Chemistry. Coordination geometry. Crystal Structures. Structural defects.

3. Crystallographic methods for the characterization of materials (Optical Crystallography, X-ray Diffraction, Scanning and Transmission Electron Microscopy).

4. Descriptive and applied mineralogy. Classification systems. Mineral groups.

5. Mineralogenesis. Classification, origin, and distribution of Earth materials (minerals and rocks). Mineral resources.

6. Geochemistry. Distribution and abundance of the elements in the Earth. Geochemistry of Earth surface processes.

4. COURSE DESCRIPTION AND TEACHING METHODOLOGY

- Practical laboratory sessions:

1. Study of symmetry with crystal models (symmetry elements and point group). (5 sessions)

2. Representing structures. (1 session)

3. Characterization of materials. (3 sessions)

4. Recognition of minerals and rocks in hand specimen. (3 sessions)

- Guided activities:

1. Problems of crystallography.

2. Identification of minerals by optical properties.

3. Calculation of mineral formulas from experimental data.

4. Phase equilibrium diagrams.

5. Classification diagrams of geological materials.

6. Problems of geochemistry.

- Tests

5. ASSESSMENT METHODOLOGY

Theoretical exam (objective test): 50%

Evaluation of activities and tests: 20% 

Evaluation of practical activities and practical exam - 30%

Attendance to the lectures is essential for the development of the other activities of the course.
