4. COURSE DESCRIPTION AND TEACHING METHODOLOGY

Students will be provided with the pertinent bibliographic sources for each topic. It is of the utmost importance to read these sources in order to prepare for the practical classes which will be closely linked to the theoretical content.

At the beginning of the term a list of topics will be shared out among the students in order to prepare an individual written project and an oral group presentation. They will be told which bibliographical and digital sources are best suited to carry out this work.

Students with special educational needs should contact the Student Attention Service (Servicio de Atención y Ayudas al Estudiante) in order to receive the appropriate academic support

5. ASSESSMENT METHODOLOGY

10% Attendance and participation: Attendance is obligatory and students must sign in each class. Those students who participate actively in class, showing they have read the pertinent bibliographical sources and who are therefore capable of participating in debates and of formulating and answering questions on the topic under study will be evaluated positively.

40% The writing of an individual essay and the preparation and participation in an oral group presentation: the following elements will be taken into account for a positive evaluation: the structure of the work, its originality (plagiarism will be penalised), the quality of the sources used, the organisation, spelling and presentation of the whole. All sources consulted must be quoted.

50% The final exam: It will contain questions on the definition of concepts and on the material studied in class together with a possible analysis of contemporary English texts.

If for any important reason a student cannot attend classes his/her final mark will depend 100% on the final exam. They will have to do the same exam as the rest of the class and they will also have to reply to two more essay questions on the same subjects that the other students have had to study for their written work and for their oral presentations.
