3. CONTENT DESCRIPTION

This is a survey course about English literature, which covers the period that extends from the earliest written texts (VIIth) to 1660.

The course has three main areas of interest: historical introduction to the relevant periods; introduction to the main authors/works; reading and analysis of a the most significant literary works; 

The Wanderer, The Dream of the Rood, The Battle of Maldon, Beowulf. The Canterbury Tales (General Prologue); Sir Gawain and the Green Knight; The Book of Margerie Kempe (The birth of her first child and her first vision); Hamlet, de W. Shakespeare; Sonnet 1 from Astrophil and Stella, by Sidney; The Faerie Queene (Book I, Canto I) by Spenser; Utopia by Thomas More (Conclusion); Paradise Lost (Book 3, lines 1-55) by John Milton.

4. COURSE DESCRIPTION AND TEACHING METHODOLOGY

Classes: theretical and practical.

Students must read the relevant texts before the sessions. This way they will be able to actively participate in their analysis. Atendance and perticipation are very important.

Relevant materials will be available at the virtual platform of the subject, and students are highly encouraged to use them.

All students must either submit a written essay or make an oral prersentation in class. Topics will be assigned at the tutorials.

5. ASSESSMENT METHODOLOGY

Final exam (up to 60% of final mark) consisting of:

identification (title and author) of 10 excerpts from different literary texts.

essay-like commentary on one of two topics related to the syllabus.

Attendance and participation in the sessions (up to 20% of final mark).

Written essay/oral presentation (up to 20% of final mark).
