3. CONTENT DESCRIPTION

The course aims to provide students with the knowledge necessary to understand the present technology at industrial process automation. The following Modules are included:

Module 1: Introduction to Automation

Introduction to Industrial Automation and Control

Module 2: Discrete Control

  • Electrical, pneumatic and electro-pneumatic systems
  • Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC): Architecture and Programming
  • Industrial Communications Networks

Module 3: Continuous Control

  • Continuous Control Foundations
  • Process Modelling
  • PID controllers and tuning

Module 4: Real Automated Systems

Understanding Industrial Processes, Measurement & Control

The assessment method is twofold: (a) final written exam (75%); (b) Lab. reports (25%)
