3. CONTENT DESCRIPTION

1.     Different theoretical approaches to translation and literary translation. Shortcomings and operativity.
1.1.   Brief history of the main theories on translation with a special view to systemic theories.
1.2.   Translation and literary translation: common and specific aspects of literary translation.
1.3.   Case study: application of two theories of translation to translated text.

2.     The socio-cultural and pragmatic element in literary translation.
2.1.   Different types of translations of literary works according to process. The target readership.
2.2.   Different types of translation according to aim.
2.3.   Literary canonical systems and their repercussions on translation.
2.4.   From past to present passing (or leaving aside) through anachronism.
2.5.   Conventions of spelling and writing, representation and edition.

3.     Modalities of literary translation: forms and genres.
3.1.   Translation of prose: short stories, novels and other prose texts (letters, treatises, and essays).
3.2.   Verse translation: narrative and lyric verse.
3.3.   Drama translation.

4.     Tools and techniques for literary translation: resources and cautions.
4.1.   Documentation of contents and contexts: handbooks, encyclopaedias, databases, digital edition projects. Google or The Great Oracle.
4.2.   Linguistic documentation: dictionaries (printed, electrónic, on- line). Google or The Great Oracle for language usage. Data bases and corpora.
4.3.   The translator is no longer alone: institutional pages, discussion groups, fora and chats in literary translation.
4.4. The (honest) consultation of previous translations. Duties for precursors and collaborators.

4. COURSE DESCRIPTION AND TEACHING METHODOLOGY

The methodology and activities of the subject will be substantiated in the following way:
- Discussion of topics and  and performance of activities in presential

- Translation of four literary texts (poetry, narrative, novel, lyrics, drama, etc.) and an accompanying report justifying aim, method, resources and tools, main difficulties, problem solving, strong and weak links of the translations, general self-assessment and a summary of learning results both in the course itself and in the practical application of the contents to the students' translating activity.

Students with special educational needs should contact the Student Attention Service (Servicio de Atención y Ayudas al Estudiante) in order to receive the appropriate academic support

5. ASSESSMENT METHODOLOGY

15 % of the final grade will be constituted by:
- Active participation in class
- Participation in debates both in class and in the virtual forum.

85 % of the final grade will be constituted by:
- Delivery of four translations and a report on them. In each of these papers the following aspects will be analyzed: quality of the translations, documentation and justification of methods, strategies and resources, idntification and solving of problmes, originality, quality of the written expression in English, and formal presentation.

Given the nature of Postgrade Studies an alternative system will be provided for students which could no attend, at least to 80 % of the sessions. This alternative will consist in an individualized tutorial, assignment of readings, and the preparation of a critical essya on the contents of the course (besides the translations and report) and his/her participation in the virtual forum.
