    1. Online/Web terminology and document serarches.
    2. Search engines, Google, thematic directories, databases.

  2. Tools for translation and for translators
    1. Software for automatic and computer-assited translation, statistical translation, rules-based translation, translation memories, localization software. Software fro website translation. Online translators.
    2. Localization.
    3. Teleworking: file transfer, compression, the "cloud", email, professional forums.
  3. Edición de documentos traducidos
    1. Features of text and html editing programmes. Spell checkers, change control, fonts, macros, cross-referencing, table of contents, indexes, tables and figures.
    2. Document portability.
    3. Other softward programmes for professional translators..
    4. Team-work.

4. COURSE DESCRIPTION AND TEACHING METHODOLOGY

The face-to-face classes will be devoted to an expository explanation of the contents of the course, by means of oral presentation and handouts. The students will install all the required software to carry out the various translation tasks and the teacher will explain their main functions and features. More particularly, we will analyze the website ProZ.com and the memory translation programmes OmegaT and WordFast Anywhere, both of which are free.

In the individual/collective tutorial hours the teacher will address the students' doubts and queries and will follow up their progress with the assignments to be graded in the final assessment.

Students with special educational needs should contact the Student Attention Service (Servicio de Atención y Ayudas al Estudiante) in order to receive the appropriate academic support

5. ASSESSMENT METHODOLOGY

The  three individual assignment to be assessed for the final grade are the following:

  • General description of the ProZ.com website and detailed description of two sections. 20% of the final grade.
  • Translation of two texts with two different Memory Translation programmes, such as OmegaT and WordFast Anywhere. Compilation of a glossary. Creation of parallel texts. Creation of translation memories. Editions of the translated texts. 30% of the final grade.
  • Commented compilation of 15 online resources for professional translators. 20% of the final grade.
